Does anyone know if there is any public transportation available to get to the chateau or is a car necessary? Thanks.

You can get there by train from Gare de Lyon to Melun (@25 min.) or RER D from Chatelet (non direct, slower). From Melun to Vaux there is the Châteaubus or taxi (15-19E one way) for the 6km/20 min. ride. There is more info on the Vaux le Vicomte website regarding the schedule for the bus.

Thanks, nuts. I was on the website and it only appeared to be in English, and then only supplied driving directions from Paris via Mapquest. Perhaps I did something wrong. At any rate, thanks for the info. Being a train lover, the train from Gare de Lyon may be just the thing. Thanks again!

Thanks nut. Though paltry, my French is enough to understand that.

Although we visited Vaux le Vicomte on a rainy day, it was a very enjoyable experience to tour. I agree with jazzcat about it being more enjoyable that the other touted castles. I can see why the king snatched the architect/builders to create Versailles.
