I have to admit, I've never had occasion to enter the system at an RER stop (for example: Luxembourg which is not a metro stop) and then switching to the metro at a metro stop. To further the example, from the Luxembourg RER to the St. Michel metro stop and then traveling on the metro from there. Can I do that? And, if so, can I do it with a metro ticket or my Navigo Decouverte?
I am considering an apartment that is quite close to the Luxembourg RER stop, but it's not that close to a metro stop. I want to know if I can use that as I would the metro.

Yes. You can easily change from RER-B at St-Michel to the Metro. You can use your ticket or Navigo Decouverte on the RER just as you would for the Metro. When I was there last month they were renovating the north end of the RER station at Lux. and the escalator up to the -1 level from the RER platform is not functioning (there is no escalator down from -1 to -2).

Thanks, Mary. I was pretty sure I could, but figured I'd better ask. The trip isn't until next year, so the renovations shouldn't be an issue by then.
