I visited back in '02, the decorations were lovely. I'll be in Paris from 12/27 - 1/2 and am thinking of going either on the 29th or 30th. Can anyone tell me if it is still worth a trip? I am guessing the markets will be over, but are the streets still decorated elaborately? Also, someone said it was very wild there close to New Year's - is that right? Thanks for the info!

No, the markets won't be over, some smaller sections may be closed but the main ones (place Broglie and place de la Cathédrale) are opened until Dec 31st. Although I bet that only tourists visit them after Xmas, no locals. When I was a child and the only market was place Broglie and was mostly selling Xmas trees and decorations, it used to close on the 24th at noon. The fact that it would be opened later came with the physical extension of the market, which attracted more tourists, who were frustrated with the closing on the 24th.
Absolutely all decorations will still be in the streets, don't worry.
As far as wildness is concerned, it is true that a kind of new tradition has built up in the past 20 years or so for some wild kids to "celebrate" the New Year (and also the 14th of July, but less so) by burning cars. But that is on the night of 31st-1st (although some start the training one or two nights before). Never during daytime - too high a risk of getting caught by the police. Also this happens mostly in the "bad" suburbs (Neuhof, Hautepierre, Cronenbourg, ...), not downtown.

Thanks Anne for the info. After I posted, I remembered you were from the area and was hoping you would see my message and reply. We will plan to take a day trip to Strasbourg from Paris on the 30th.

It's been many years since I was in strasbourg but I absolutely loved the christmas markets... they are really special. This makes a trip there worth it! I'm looking to see where else I can visit some christmas markets this year
