Want to find a really good set of 6 steak knives. I have seen a shop just off Palais Royal, but the prices were...... ouch ouch ouch. I would really appreciate suggestions for where to go. Knife specialist shops ? I am sure they exist in a town like Paris, but where ? Is a price level around a max of 200 euros realistic, or am I kidding myself ?

Gitte , PM me your address and I will send you a set of Laguiole steak knives, I bought to keep as a wedding present a few years ago. I haven't been invited to any weddings!

Some of you may recognize the TJ Maxx store name and their HomeGoods store. I lucked into a set of Laguiole knives at the one in Northern KY several years ago. I think I paid something like $40 for them. My guess is that no one knew what they were. The handles are each a different color, which perhaps made them less appealing. I recall seeing these at markets for upwards of 300 Euros. That was quite a find for me!

That's where I got mine too , Katharine. My handles are all the same stainless steel . They look like the ones you see in Paris restaurants

Guess I better start shopping at TJ Maxx!! ;D
Jo (Actually, we have Winners in Canada, which I think is owned by TJ Maxx, I think I will make a trip to their houseware section soon!)

Gitte, The BHV has a good selection of Laguiole and I think you should be able to come in within budget.
For what its worth, not all Laguiole's are created equal. Handles range from horn to wood to stainless to plastic. And the actual name only refers to a place, not the mfg. Much of the stuff seen in markets and abroad is actually made in China.

Jo and Jody, my collection of Laguiole knives (with the bee on the handle) -- a carving set, a cheese set, and two sets of steak knives -- all came from TJ Maxx, Ross, or Marshalls -- I agree with Jody that I don't think anyone knows what they are, so I always snarfed them up whenever I found them.

Beautiful Gitte, and he'll have them for the rest of his life. Wise investment.

Your son will love the gift and as he uses them will always be reminded of the love of the giver.
Our son and wife will have just had their 25th anniversary shortly before we are in Paris in 2010. Have been wondering what to get them and you have given me an idea. Will certainly look at the tableware.
