I am taking two newbies to Paris next month.
I'm wondering if anyone on the board has been to both the Gregorian Chants at Notre Dame as well as an organ recital at St. Eustache and would recommend one over the other.
Both take place on Sunday, so it seems I need to decide which to do. Even thought logistically I could, I'd rather not do both.
Thanks.

I have been to organ recitals at both Notre Dame (once) and St Eustache (twice), but not the Gregorian chants. I found the acoustics better at Notre Dame, although that may have been due to where I was sitting.
One thing that surprised me, although in retrospect it probably shouldn't have, was the amount of noise during the recitals. There was a great deal of movement -- people arriving for the following mass at St Eustache and fellow tourists walking around at Notre Dame -- and a steady buzz of conversation. There was a bit of shushing from those who were there for the music, but there was never anything approaching silence during the performances.

Thanks for that! From a strictly acoustical viewpoint, do you have a preference?

I really preferred the acoustics at Notre Dame. The organ sounded clearer, brighter, and more lively than at St Eustache. (I hasten to add that I am no expert on such things, but that's certainly the way I recollect it.)
Edited to add: I can't quite imagine what Gregorian chants sound like at Notre Dame. They are sung unaccompanied, aren't they?

Yes, they are. And I'm no expert on such matters either, so no worries there. I think I'll head for Notre Dame. Thanks!
Btw, your pics on the other thread were terrific!

Happy, I am planning to go to Notre Dame for the Gergorian chant on September 20th. I will try to let you know my thoughts.

I've been the gregorian chants at Notre Dame, but not the organ concerts. I found it to be pretty amazing, as the music was more or less created for the gothic architecture. Very impressive. And moving.

Thanks, Phread. That just reaffirms my decision to go to ND.

I'll second Phread's thoughts on the gregorian chants at ND - I have been there twice and thoroughly enjoyed both times. I have also been to St. Eustache and St. Eglise for organ concerts and although they are enjoyable as well, I think you might enjoy being at ND more.

Thanks for asking this question, Happy, as I really enjoy Gregorian chants too. What time is the performance at ND? Thanks!

Does anyone know how long the Gregorian chant services last? I've wanted to go to one of them, but thought it might be rude to get up and leave early, as the church service I like to attend starts at 11.
