Hi, As you may know I am going to Paris in THREE WEEKS (I am a tad excited) and will also visit London for three days. I will be staying in Paris for the first 5 nights, then London for 3, then back to Paris for 4. My last night will be with relatives near airport.
I booked the Hotel Place du Louvre for the first 5 nights. Got a room for 106 euros. When I return to Paris I have then got a single room at Hotel Diana for 75 euros.
Due to recent euro crushing of dollar I have looked into staying at Hotel Diana for the whole time, I enqured and they do have a room available for whole time.
Problem,, I am nervous as Hotel Diana does not take CC deposit but just says to reconfirm reservation week before arrival. With that system I am worried it would be easy for hotel to screw up reservations.
Also, I think Hotel Du Louvre is meant to be the nicer place, but, I am just not sure about area, it is near Chatelet,, but not too near ( i hope) and area may be a bit quiet at night( which I don't really like ,, walking down deserted streets after dark, I prefer ones with cafes open etc) ..
Addresses are:
Hotel Diana- 73 Rue St Jacques (5h)
or Hotel Place du Louvre- 21 rue des Pretes de Saint Germain l'Auxerrrois.
Price difference will work out to me saving 200 euros,, which while not huges,, is still alot of money for a bed! LOL
Any opinions will do,, I don't even care if they are accurate.. LOL ( just kidding)

Can't comment on the location part, but I think you could give Hotel Diana a chance since your visit is only 3 weeks away. Keep the other hotel as a back-up if you can, usually you can cancel upto 5 days ahead without penalties but do check the cancellation conditions to be sure. All other things being equal the possibility of saving 200 euros is not to be sneezed at! BTW, what did you finally pick for London?

....... but, I am just not sure about area, it is near Chatelet,, but not too near (I hope) and area may be a bit quiet at night (which I don't really like) Hotel de la Place du Louvre is not anywhere near Châtelet, dear ! It is near...........well....... the Louvre ! You will be wading in tourists round the clock, 24/7 ! LOL ! ;D So you may relax and stop being nervous. However, to spend 106 euros on just a bed and a shower is in my world a bit too much. No more than 75-80 euros MAX. for a hotel room, if you travel solo. And there are hundreds of good, clean budget hotels in Paris, which will serve your purpose. But of course, it is a matter of personal preferences. And everyone in TA seems to adore the place. www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187147-d248395-Reviews-Hotel_de_la_Place_du_Louvre-Paris_Ile_de_France.htmlTA reviews for Diana. In general they look OK too - considering you save a fair amount of €€. www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g187147-d567154-Reviews-Hotel_Diana-Paris_Ile_de_France.html The location is OK too, only I can't remember what kind of traffic noise there is in Rue St. Jacques. So ask them for a courtyard-facing room, if possible. And can't you just email them and make them send you a confirmation ? Normally that is no problem ? www.hotel-diana-paris.com/Francais--plan-acces.phtml

Hotel Place du Louvre is almost next door to my favorite hotel in Paris, Relais du Louvre. Their web site is relaisdulouvre.com. Sophie Aulnette is the manager and a delightful person. Both hotels are on a small street and very close to the Seine and restaurants and the Louvre.
As to safety, there always seemed to be people around till ten or so. But it is not a neighborhood in the traditional sense so when the tourists and restaurants close, the streets do get quiet.
We were there in June 2006 and September 2007 and generally felt safe.
I don't know anything about the other hotel.

Thanks for words of wisdom everyone, I agree that I could and should sleep cheaper,, but I haven't stayed on the right bank since 2005 and I thought it would be a nice change, plus so close to Louvre ( where I do spend alot of time) and breakie is included.. but, there is my dilema( and aren't I lucky to have such a problem,,, what with all the other problems we suffer in "real"( read non Paris time) life. LOL

Oh, , ADFS,, I will be staying for FREE in London,, so that does give me some "play " in my budget. We have friends who live outside London( 1.5 hrs) and asked if I wanted to stay with them, I said no thanks as I only had three days and just wanted so spend them close to London( I have stayed with them before and enjoyed those visits though). So, they said no problem, that they had a brother who is a vicar in a church near Sloane Square, and the church has a Parish House attached that I could stay in for free!! I know the area a bit,, it is nice, and I think it will be fun to stay with a vicar...I have raised a few of my friends eyebrows ,, but I have reassured them that the vicar is not only 75, but married( so to speak) to a man! I think reputation shall be quite safe. Our Friends say he is also going to try and arrange a private tour of St Paul's,, and a few other sites..should be interesting. That and I also have 2 nights booked with relatives near CDG( near Chantilly) ,, so I actually am getting 5 free nights accommodation.. pretty good deal I though. Of course traditionally I take said relatives out for a dinner that always costs a few nights accommodation anyways ;D ,, but they are worth it as I love them!

Hi Joan, I think you must be in Paris RIGHT NOW ( ) but I'm not sure I know which hotel you finally selected? So, what did you choose, and what do you think about it?? (And please, do tell us how much fun we are missing . . . .)

Yes, Joan - please let us know if you are staying at the Hotel Diana and if so, how you like it. It doesn't seem to be too convenient to a Metro stop or maybe I'm not looking at the map well enough. My regular hotel is booked when I will be there in September and while I do have the hotel that I stayed in May booked for September, it is quite a bit higher room rate than the Hotel Diana - would love your opinion if that is where you are staying. Post trrip note,, did not stay at Hotel Diana... loved the hotel I had for the first segment of the trip so much I returned to after my short visit to London. The hotel I stayed in ( Hotel de la Place du Louvre gave me a bigger room for same price I had booked for back in April( 106 euros ) so I was happy. I walked by Hotel Diana,, and while location was nice,, it was not charming.. and the metro and Siene were not as close.
