When planning our trip to Normandy, I came to the conclusion that Bayeux would be a good base for visiting the D-Day beaches and also exploring some nearby towns. I’d read that some people opt to stay in Caen, but after seeing both places, I can honestly say that there’s no comparison. Caen is a big city, just like any other modern city. Bayeux, on the other hand, is a small, quaint town that wasn’t destroyed during the war so it has retained its original character. From the moment we arrived in Bayeux, I couldn’t stop marveling at its charm and saying how happy I was that we’d decided to make it our base for 3 nights.
I selected the Churchill Hotel after having read all the glowing reviews on TA. It’s an old building, but with lots of character and as much charm as the town of Bayeux itself. I had expected to like it, but I didn’t think I’d fall in love with the place the moment I stepped inside. The decor is very pleasant, and the walls are covered with photos from WWII. We could have spent hours just looking at all the displays. It’s really a lovely place, and the people there are warm and wonderful, which made our stay there a true delight. The only negative thing I can say about the hotel is that our bathtub was very slippery, so we were extremely careful every time we showered. I informed the owner of this fact, which she noted with concern.
The location of the hotel couldn’t be better. It’s a stone’s throw from the cathedral, the famous Bayeux tapestry (a must see....70 meters of embroidery telling the story of William the Conqueror), and the point from which we were picked up for our Battlebus tour. We couldn’t have asked for a more convenient location.
We dined in 2 restaurants in Bayeux and had great meals in both. When we checked into our hotel, it was quite late ….about 9 P.M…..and we were starving. The lady at the reception desk immediately wrote down the name of a restaurant, La Fringale (sp.?), and she told us that we didn’t need to change since it’s a casual place. We weren’t expecting very much, but it turned out to be fantastic. Nice-looking and good food. I can’t remember everything I ate, but I do recall magret de canard and then ile flottante for dessert. Yummy !!! ;D
The 2nd night we dined in a restaurant that I had selected months before. It’s located in the hotel “Lion D’Or”, and it’s fancier than the other restaurant we had eaten in the night before. I had read some very positive reviews of that place, and even an old high school friend had recommended it to me. We both enjoyed our 4 course dinner , which, btw, began with complimentary glasses of champagne. I gave mine to Shlomo.
Here are some photos, which do not include any meals. Sorry.
The outside of the hotel doesn't reveal how charming it is on the inside.
Inside the hotel - Note the photos on the walls.
The beautiful breakfast room - Note the skylights.
A section right off the breakfast room, which they call the "salon". We had breakfast there on the last morning.
The Cathedral
We were the first ones to arrive at the Tapestry Museum, and while we were waiting for it to open, I was doing some barre exercises.
