There is a new exhibit at the Louvre. For anyone with an interest in WWII, the exhibit documents the movement of many of the artworks to chateaux in the French countryside for safekeeping during the war, the Mona Lisa among them. Interestingly, it wasn't an attempt to hide them from the Germans. The Germans were entirely aware of the movement. It's also interesting to note that the Louvre stayed open for the entire length of the Occupation. The exhibit takes place from May 7 through August 31 (or exactly two months prior to my arrival in Paris )

Sounds interesting, I know that hubby will want to visit the Louvre again this trip, so maybe we'll fit this in, something new to see (as if I've seen all the Louvre has to offer! We haven't even scratched the surface, even after 3 trips there)

Shoot. We'd have loved to see that one but won't be in Paris until October

Happygoin, Thanks for the info re the WWII exhibit at the Louvre. I think my son in particular might like to see that exhibit (he seems interested in all things WWII). Is the Eygpt exhibit still at the Louvre. We would enjoy that one as well...seems I recall thinking it would still be around in June. Since Paris was occupied by the Germans in WWII, I wonder why "they" felt the artwork was safer in a chateaux than at the Louvre? Was the chateaux in occupied France as well? The Germans may have condoned the movement if they thought it would be more difficult for allied forces to find the artwork there (should an invasion occur) or such made it easier to move the artwork into Germany "in time"...or perhaps they just felt so certain France was theirs...no worry where the art was as long as it was in occupied France. Hmm..

Was just at the Louvre yesterday -- the Portes de Ciel (Egyptian) exhibit is there, but I didn't see anything about the WWII exhibit.
That doesn't mean it isn't there, only that there aren't any signs for it under the Pyramid.
It was nice -- no lines at all, and only moderately annoying crowds at the "biggies" (was there with my niece and her best pal on the pal's first trip to Paris, so we had to see Mona Lisa, Winged Victory, and Venus...they all said to send their regards back to OPF!)
