Please indulge me for a moment and let me promote a little bit of my beloved homeland in Paris . There is a new exhibition at Galerie Impaire celebrating the work of 30 New Zealand Artists. We have a very big and rich cultural and arts scene in NZ and I am going to try and fit this show in sometime over the 3 days I am there this week if I can and thought you local Parisians and regular visitors might like somewhere new to go as well that may be a bit different than the norm

It is with great pleasure that Galerie Impaire presents selections from this exciting collection. This will be the first time any of this work has been seen in France.
Galerie Impaire is pleased to present Home Grown: New Work from New Zealand. Curated by artist/lecturer/researcher Stuart Shepherd, this exhibition will highlight the work of self-taught and contemporary folk artists from New Zealand (N.Z).
As part of his ongoing effort to raise awareness about the extraordinarily rich artistic culture in New Zealand, Stuart Shepherd embarked on a nation-wide survey which resulted the collection of over 3000 slides of works from previously unknown New Zealand artists. As a result, the Stuart Shepherd Gallery (supported by the national N.Z. arts organization: Arts Access Aotearoa) was established as a means to showcase these works.
Among the artists represented are:
Martin Thompson
Over the past 30 years, Thompson has developed mathematical formulae for the division of 2 D space. His drawing technique involves graph paper, pen and ink, and the use of scalpel and clear tape. He is the only artist from Australasia to have been collected by the American Folk Art Museum for their permanent collection.
James Robinson
Winner of the James Wallace National Painting Award, he was granted a residency in N.Y. C. in 2007. James elevates his feverish post-punk diaries into tapestries of marking, incising and transcribing. He is represented in this show by a series of collages begun during his time in N.Y.
Ray Ritchie
A 72 year old, from Wellington N.Z. is showing several works of acrylic paint on cardboard. Ritchie produces whimsical depictions of his suburban world. His work is full of visual puns, hi-keyed colour, and comic musings on human folly.
Andrew Blythe
A rising star in the field of “outsider Art “ His work was selected for special review by Artnet.com where it was compared to the graphic power of Franz Kline. Andrew will be represented by his series of negative and positive progressions in acrylic on paper.
Rhys Tong
Produces pictograms in acrylic on canvas. His images have an essential “cave -painting” kind of graphic quality that is completely intuitive and the subject matter is local and idiosyncratic.
Robert Rapson
Rapson is a self-taught sculptor whose ceramic work has gained him a wide reputation and earned him many national awards. He is represented in this exhibition by a series of the glazed ships for which he is best known.
Finally, two young photographers, Maia McDonald and John Lake, who work within a documentary genre, will exhibit work that provides particular perspectives on the surface and the psyche of New Zealand. Their images provide a setting for the work on paper in the exhibition, and run counter to better known, tourist-oriented, depictions of New Zealand landscape.
**Exhibition curator, Stuart Shepherd will be in Paris from April 23-May 3 and is available for press interviews by appointment.**
