Can one enter the Grand Palais just to see the newly restored building itself or can you get in only if there is an exhibit in that part of the building? I've been to the Marie Antoinette and the Picasso exhibits but they were not in the restored area.

Darcy--yeah, it's my understanding that the only way to get inside (other than the foyer) is to have a ticket to the exhibit in that part of the building. I guess the trick is figuring out which exhibit is where.

Thanks, Annette! I guess I could just ask if there is an exhibit there and buy a ticket regardless of what's being presented. It's the bldg I really want to see.

I read somewhere that the main part was going to be partially closed for restoration AGAIN!

Thanks for the heads up Jody!
from the Grand Palais website:
The Grand Palais restoration and development programme March 12 2009
At a press conference on March 12 2009, Yves Saint-Geours, President of the Établissement public du Grand Palais, unveiled the Grand Palais restoration and development programme. New areas around the Nave are to be restored and soon reopened to the public. To inaugurate the next phase in the work, the press conference was followed by a historic and symbolic moment, as journalists and leading personalities witnessed and roundly applauded the first hammer blows being made to the bricked up doorway that has sealed off the Nave from the VIP lounge (the salon d'honneur) since 1948. This was followed by a visit of the VIP lounge and the south-east gallery prior to refurbishment.

Darn. Guess I'll move it to the "next trip" list. But we still may do the Warhol exhibit, just won't expect to see much of the building like we'd been hoping.

The Grand Palais is so huge that it would still be worth the visit, even with the renovation work going on.

phread, I think we're still not sure, I know I'm not, if one can just walk through the restored areas if there is no exhibit being presented. I just really want to see the interior of the bldg and having no exhibit on would be a plus for me. I think I'm still confused on this.
