How long do the concerts held at la Madeleine, St. Chapelle, etc. usually last? I'm wondering how long to allow for making dinner reservations afterward.

Denise is correct about St. Chapelle concerts. Almost always one hour long. Concerts at Madeleine vary greatly. Often they are given by school ensembles or foreign groups. They tend to be more informal and if time is running long you won't be noticed if you quietly exit.

Great--thanks you two! If I make reservations for 9:30 after an 8:00 concert I'll probably be safe. Has anyone visited St. Ephrem in the 5th for one of their concerts? It's very close to where we'll be staying, and they offer some candlelit concerts that sound kinda fun and cozy!

I haven't visited St. Ephrem but in the neighborhood is St. Julian le Pauvre. Located at the south end of the charming, small Square Viviani (Quai St. Michel), it features concerts almost every week. Unlike many churches, it does charge for their concerts but always worth the price.

Thanks Patestore--maybe I'll check them out, too. I think it would be a nice way to spend an evening (if we're not too tired!). St. Ephrem charges 15-23€ for their concerts, BTW, and seem to offer something every other night or so.

I booked a concert there last year but was too tired to go. Is this the site you used, Annette? www.ampconcerts.com/

I attended a presentation of Beethoven's Requiem last autumn at la Madeleine- it was 40 Euros for the 'up front' seats, and it was magnificent. We were no more than 5 metres from the vocalists, and the acoustics were simply amazing.
I think that one was 2 hours or thereabouts -- and because it didn't start until 8p or so, it was quite late by the time we left.
Well worth it, though -- I'd do it again in a heartbeat. (I'm planning on attending a concert here in my little town on Sunday in the ancient church...they definitely knew what they were doing with acoustics with all that stone and the arches!)

Yes Darcy, that's one of the sites I've been exploring. I probably got the link from the forum here some time ago--it's been saved on my favorites for too long to remember who referred it to me tho!
Sunshine, thanks for the heads up about the longer duration at some of the concerts. As much as my husband likes music, I think he'd kill me if I made him sit thru 2 hours of classical music. He was rather hoping we'd be able to attend that Simply Red concert that we're barely missing.
