We are staying at 40 bis rue de rivoli in May. What does the "bis" mean?

It means 1/2 ..40 1/2 rue de whatever, or 4o a , the building may have 2 doors.

Jo is right, and I also have read that sometimes it indicates that one building was replaced by two (with basically the same address).

Thanks guys.....I actually just read the same thing in the Cara Black novel I just started this afternoon! (Thanks again, Gitte!) Talk about a coincidence......I was just going to post that I had come across the answer, but of course, the generous posters on OPF had already been there for me.

Besides bis, there is also ter sometimes: 2, 2bis, 2ter, 4, 6, etc.
