Even if you're not the "real" Madonna and wear a reasonably normal-shaped bra, it sure will be fun to tell people that "Madonna's a member of our forum !"

I am finally getting around to writing this and I hope it's not too boring... I'm a single woman (never married, no kids ;D) and have always loved to travel, especially in Europe. My work has fortunately enabled me to travel around the world, but I have chosen to spend most of my leisure time in Europe. I have studied French (and Italian) over the years and, although not fluent, I would probably be considered an "advanced intermediate" at a school. The better my language skills have become, the more rich my travel experiences have been, which I'm sure is true for many of you. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, just about 4 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge. Fortunately, our weather is good enough year round that I can play tennis several times a week. I also love to hike, bike and paint with oils. I head up a management consulting firm which specializes in leadership and organization development and we serve primarily major US companies. My educational background is in Industrial Psychology (MS) and Applied Behavioral Science (PhD). For many, many years I have had a fascination with all things about the WWII era. I am always interested in learning about that period. I adore the music of that time and know all the words to so many of the songs. Aside from the War itself and the Holocaust, there is a certain romance about this era, which is certainly epitomized in the music, and it draws me in for some reason. I made my first trip to Paris in 1983 and am going back for a month in mid-Sept. This will be the 3rd time I will have rented an apartment for at least one month there and it will be my 21st trip to Paris. Although I have traveled both with others and alone, I really prefer the latter. Alone, I can connect to a far greater extent with the place I am visiting -- I observe more, converse more with strangers, am approached more readily (in a good sense) by others. I am constantly aware of things I might miss if I were with someone else -- little things like the aroma from a patisserie, the sound of a piano from a cafe that I pass, the perfectly arranged store windows, the enjoyment of a good meal and flirtation with the waiter. All of these kinds of things MAKE the experience for me. I used to just wing it when I arrived, without even a hotel reservation in the old days, but now I research pretty thoroughly before I go. I like to be spontaneous once I get there and usually don't plan my day until the night before (always subject to change if a serendipitous situation should present itself .) I look forward to meeting some of you when we are in Paris. A bientot, mes amis! Mary

Mary, I'm so glad you told us a little about yourself.
How lucky that your work takes you to Europe and other wonderful places. I am really enjoying your month long travel journal and I'm so sad that it's soon coming to the end. It's time to start researching your next trip!
Edit: Oh dear, I got all messed up here. It's Janet, of course, who wrote the month long travel journal. I think I need another glass of wine!

Darcy, I only WISH I had the discipline to write those journals which Janet has been faithfully delivering! I am hoping to meet you and several of our other OPF pals when we are all in Paris in October. Mary

Katharine, I have stayed twice in the 6eme and this year I'll be staying in the 5eme close to the River.
The first time I rented was in 1997 and I stayed in a so-so place on the rue Jacob near the rue de Buci. I was there for 6 weeks and I hated the kitchen so much that I never cooked a meal there. At that time it wasn't as easy as it is now to access available apts. on the internet and the websites weren't so good. Last year I stayed in a charming apt. on the rue de Conde near the Carrefour Odeon, which is a great area (I prefer the south side of Bd. St-Germain.) This year I am in a large studio on the rue de l'Hotel Colbert, just a few meters from the River. It looks like a really pretty and comfortable apt. so I'm hoping for the best.

Hi all. I am still figuring out how to post/use this site. I like what I've seen so far. . . I'll introduce myself as well. . . not too much to say. . . . I studied France (all over) for 9 years in school- from 4th grade thru college (a few grades did not offer it). I have dreamed of visiting for many, many years and finally last year, my first time. I rented an apartment on the corner of the park behind St. Eustache and near Rue St. Honore. It was an excellent choice except for the 4th fl. walk up. Next year I will be renting in the 6th on Blvd. St. Germain a block from Odeon. I managed to get to many of the "main attractions" last year, as I wasn't sure how long before returning, but I decided to make it a priority. I have a binder about 2-1/2" thick with all my research- somehow I learned that the planning is half the fun, as my trips don't last nearly long enough. Question: Becky- have you ever posted on another site using a different name? I think I have heard of you with another name- But I also recognize Kerouac and Joan1, I believe. I am a true junkie! Back to trip planning- - - Dena
