Thanks for the welcome everyone. I admit I was tardy in finally introducing myself. Now that I've re-read my intro, I wish I had done a bit of editing before posting. Oh well, I don't think the grammar police are here.

Hi Everyone! I'm new to this forum but I am now in love with all things French. I had an interesting first trip for my birthday in 2009. I met what I thought was the sweetest most wonderful guy on Craig's List in June of 2009 (I know...I know) He lived in Paris for 2 years and went to college there and went back every year for the last 30 years. He offered to be my guide and we started a budding romance which we planned on consumating upon arrival in the romance capital of the world. Problem was, he ditched me 72 hours after landing. He slipped out of the apartment while I was sleeping. I didn't speak French, didn't know how to find a SIM card for my international phone, couldn't call out on the phone in the apartment because you needed a phone card (which I couldn't have read the instructions for.) I am from Los Angeles and have never taken public transportation so the buses and Metro in Paris were an absolute mystery. I was heartbroken, panic-stricken, lonely and desperate and I didn't know a soul. I wanted to go home. Twenty four hours after what I began to refer to as The Suprise Abortion, I met someone that I had encountered in a chat room of Paris expats at: www.katiaandkyliemac.com She took me out and got me drunker that I already was. (I had gone shopping to make a lovely dinner for my original travel companion and bought wine, whiskey and his favorite beer.) After I discovered his "Dear Janice" letter, I started to drink with reckless abandon (pun intended). After dinner with my new friend, I ended up running into the garbage cans someone left in the hallway and ended up on my bum coated in garbage. The night before, my original travel companion had taken me to a swanky restaurant where I had tasted frog legs and escargot and crepe suzette for the first time. Twenty four hours later I was drunk on my butt and coated in garbage. I turned into an amazing trip and it was quite an adventure. I now in love with ALL things French and hope to move there someday soon.

That really is the way to do it in style girl. Very pleased things turned out right for you, every cloud has a silver lining, as the old saying goes. Now you can relax and enjoy Paris and life.

I am so sorry but I am afraid I laughed at your intro. It must have been awful for you, all alone in a strange city with the inhabitants speaking a foreign language. Congratulations for surviving and for joining this happy band of Parisophiles. Welcome.

me, too -- lots of other people would have just curled into a ball at about the "drunk and covered in garbage" phase and crawled sobbing back to the US, bitter about France and the French. (and frankly you'd have had the right!)
I admire your strength and courage to not only get through it, but to have so much fun on the way...and to come out still liking France!

I have posted a couple time already but I wanted to write a intro. My wife and I got married last Oct and after all the wedding bills we couldn't afford a proper honeymoon. So for our 1 year anniversary we decided on going to Paris for 10 days (Sept 2 - Sept 11). We have both spend time in europe as I studied and London and she studied in Rome. This will be my first time in Paris but my wife has been there serveral time. We are excited go on our first real trip together. We aren't planning on many touristy things as we have done that enough on previous trips. We are going to focus more on living like a parisian. We are staying here between Sept 2- Sept 7 www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p425224?cid=E_hrownerinquiry_DB_O_20110801_propID_link_LPROP_1#reviewsThen we are going off to Dinard for two nights in a hotel with an Ocean view. I dont have the link as my wife worked that reservation out. You guys have been a big help so far and I look forward sharing more ideas with all of you. Also look for a write up after we get back on our trip highlights. Thanks, Matt

I hope you have a great belated honeymoon. You will certainly be in the heart of the city. Your side trip to Dinard will be in total contrast. I have fond memories of Dinard, back in the days of expense accounts. I had a friend, managing director of our main rival no less, who owned a light aircraft. With another fellow we spent Le Quatorze 1989 in Dinard. We had dinner that evening sharing an iron pot of coq au vin, while we sat on the hotel terrasse, watching the fireworks, dancing and assorted merriment on the beach. Most people were dressed to suit the occasion, which was the 200th anniversary of the storming of the Bastille

:)Welcome to the forum Matt. Belated congratulations on your marriage
Glad you booked that apartment, it is a bargain. I have bookmarked it for future use.
SandyM and I had a nice lunch one day last May in the cafe on the corner, you can see from your apartment.
They have a pet dog who they keep away from customers, but Sandy ( being beyond a dog lover), teased him out and the poor dog got told off!LOL!
Hope you find as many friendships here as I have.
Denise Love from England.

I'd like to chime in and welcome you too. Without a doubt, you have chosen the best venue for a honeymoon. I can't imagine your trip being anything less than fabulous.

Nice to know a bit more about you , Matt. And I'm sure you 2 will have a fantastic time. We too were married in October and are celebrating our 50th this year with a Paris trip. May you have as long and as happy marriage as we do. Make sure you visit the Richard Lenoir market that is near to your apt. Take the bus..lots along Rivoli, or the metro to Place Bastille and you can see it from there. Sundays and Thursdays, you'll really like it. There is aslo an arts and crafts fair in the same place on Saturdays!

Hello everyone. I have lurked on this forum for quite some time, but finally joined today. My name is Paula, I'm from Toronto, Canada, and some of you may know me as pmmcTO on Trip Advisor. I've been to Paris 6 times now (the last 4 times have been between August 2008 and November 2010), and we are planning our next visit in June of 2012. I now have 10 months to research and plan out every last minute detail, go on Google streetview a few thousand times more, look up every restaurant in a 5 K radius, etc. Not that I'm obsessed, or anything. I will also get to experience my family and friends saying "you're going to Paris again? Why don't you go someplace else?". Good question, but not one I have an answer for! How do you explain PPD to someone who has never experienced it?
