We are going to be in Paris again in September. We plan of spending time at Vincennes now that they are reopened after the restoration work. I cannot tell from the websites what is open for general wandering around and what is only on a guided tour. Has anyone been there recently to know? Is the keep part of the tour? Can you wander the grounds freely? There is a great website for the site: en.chateau-vincennes.fr/index.php Maybe I missed it but I could not get an idea of what I was looking for. Thanks. Rob

Rob, it has been about 14 months since we visited Vincennes, but it was late in the day and if any tours were offered, they were over by the time we arrived. We were only able to visit the Donjon before closing time. Would have loved to go into St. Chapelle, but it was closed for restoration. There seem to be a lot of government offices on the site as well, so I don't think you can freely wander everywhere, but there is still quite a bit to see.

You can wander around the grounds freely, but you have to be on the paid tour to go inside any of the buildings. I believe the chapel is still closed for work. I think it's still worthwhile, as long as you've seen the other major attractions already.

Dear Rob: Hello. It was just a few months ago that I made a visit to the Chateau de Vincennes with a friend. The spaces had been closed for such a long time for restoration and we were pleased to find that the "Keep" was fully open to our easy browsing. I felt that we were able to see most of the structure within the old defensive walls around the "keep" tower. The chapel was still under restoration. We didn't even think to visit the palace that is also on the grounds. Our slow visit through the various old rooms beyond the gatehouse kept our attention. We did see a group of young students on a tour through the spaces, but these were the same areas that we had access to seeing. There were still some beautifully painted walls on view in the different vaulted rooms. It's well worth visiting and easy to get to at the end of the metro line 1. If I should make the trip again before September I'll be sure to post any changes I might find. Hope this will be of some help to you in planning your visit. Sincerely, Michael
