I am back from a 12 days visit to Paris, of course deeply in PPD! One of the highlight on my visit was a small exhibit at the Musée Maillol. I discover the work of a remarkable painter named Séraphine de Senlis. A humble cleaning lady who was haunted with the need to paint find herself employed in Senlis by Wilhelm Uhde (one of the first Picasso collector) who will discover her talent and the intensity of her florales compositions. She is not from a specific school, she is not influence by anyone. She make her own colors and will bring her secret with her.
It is a small exhibit, but if you want to know more there also a film about her life staring Yolande Moreau and Ulrich Tukur, currently playing at Cinema Balzac, 1 rue Balzac in the 8ème arr.
The musée Maillol is at 63 rue de Grenelle in the 7ème arr.

I have read quite a few articles about Séraphine lately, all of them related to the film . This film rescued her from oblivion as she was totally unknown to the grand public until now (and I am very much "le grand public" when art is concerned : . She was an incredible person, sadly she ended her life in a psychiatric asylium . Yolande Moreau is a great actress, unfortunately the film didn't make it to our town .

Hi Cybee,
I checked the web site and if I remember right, the Seraphine exhibit ends Jan. 5, 2009. If I'm reading correctly, the musee has some Seraphine paintings as part of their regular collection. I checked the address on Google StreeView and the musee is beautiful - would be worth a visit just to look at the building - am I right LuckyLuc? I'll be in the area so might as well go and have a look.

Hey, Sandra M! Thank you for checking on that for me! The last day of that exhibit would be the day after my XYZ birthday! (gulp). Sorrowfully, I will miss the exhibit as I won't be in Paris until late February! But maybe , as you say, the museum is worth a look/see anyway! Thanks for checking, again!!!

Yes Sandra, the exhibit close on January 5th, and the musée is worth a visit just for it permanent collections. I especially like the drawings cabinets where you can view works from Cézanne, Degas, Ingres and Picasso.

Thanks, Luc - the musee certainly does sound like a place to put on my "to do" list. I'm looking forward to a visit.
