Hello, I'm a newbie. I'm travelling to Paris in April with my husband. It's our first time out of the U.S. The more we weigh our options, the more an apartment seems to suit us, the one thing that keeps coming back to me is distance. Originally I was only looking into one of the central arrondissements, because I'd like to mostly walk or use the bicycle system. I just didn't know if things out in like the 17 or 18 were still reasonable walking distance to many of the attractions or if we'd waste a lot of time traveling. We're in our early-mid twenties so walking isn't a huge deal, nor is having to climb steps. I'd like to stay somewhere on the cheap side (up to like 115 eur) preferably with a washer. Anyone have any advice?

Welcome, Windy. With your budget, I don't think you're likely to find anything "nice" in the single-digit arrondissements. You might be able to find an efficiency, but you'll probably need to give up on accesories like a washing machine. Beware any apartment in the single digits that seems too cheap. You'll usually get what you pay for! Don't pay too much attention to the arrondissement numbers, though. With a careful look at a map, you might notice that the portions of the 17, 18, 10, 11 & 12 are as close to city center as portions of the 7th!

Yeah, I guess when I say "nice" what I mean is really character and preferably not dirty. I've found some pretty neat places, although they seem to get a little better less centrally located. I just didn't know how to judge distance I guess. We could go a little higher, I'm trying to decide on spending money on a place or lodging ultra cheap and splurging elsewhere .

Windy, the apartment I stay at in Paris would suit you and your budget perfectly. It's through Vacation In Paris and it's their studio #100 called Studio Charmer. It has everything you need, including a washing machine. The only downside that I can figure is that it has 44 old winding steps to the door, but I've always thought that they added to the charm. I've stayed there twice and it's been fine both times. Ideally suited to a first time visitor, it's steps from the river and Notre Dame. The only complaint I have is that there isn't a really great patisserie/boulangerie closeby. But that's a fairly benign complaint. Have a look: vacationinparis.com/apts/id_100.htm

Hi and welcome , Windy. As Truff said the outer numbers can be just as convenient. Paris transportation is great too , there's always a metro or a bus line nearby. I really like the look of an apt. Gitte posted a while back. It's in your price range and looks really nice. She actually aw it and it looked like the pictures www.ourparisforum.com/index.cgi?board=apartments&action=display&thread=2272

Welcome,
The apartment shown by Happy looks great and very reasonable. It is a terrific location! Probably better for 1st timers than the one Gitte looked at but you are unlikely to go wrong either way.
Another agency that has great apartments is perfectlyparis.com But $120 per night for Happy's apartment is hard to beat.

Windy - Paris isn't that big, but you would get tired of walking from the 17th or 18th arr. to the "major" sights, so forget about that. Paris has the world's most efficient, easy, clean and safe metro, so there are really not many places intramuros that feel "out of the way", in my opinion - as long as you have a metro station, a bakery and a supermarket round the corner (which you do almost everywhere). Being in a real Parisian neighbourhood which is not swarmed by the buscrowds adds a flavour to your vacation that you would not easily get in the most packed tourist area, like southend Marais or Saint Germain des Près. I agree with Truffaut: beware of "cheap" prices in the tourist areas, because then you are almost certain of getting a no-good dump. This is the prettiest apartment I have ever seen - but some may say that it is not "central" enough, even though it meets all other requirements. And look at the price ! I am going for one week in September and certainly again in 2010. (I stumbled over it by chance in Homelidays and went to see it in Sept. this year) www.ourparisforum.com/index.cgi?board=reports&action=display&thread=2211www.homelidays.com/paris-12/apartment-flat164583en.htm

Anyone have any advice? Windy, I think that there are Many options within your budget (800Euro/wk). You are coming to Paris for the first time and it might be best to stay within Arrondissments 1-7. I totally agree with Gitte, in that staying in the 18th, 12th etc. is not that far away with the excellent Paris Metro system. Her chosen apartment in the 12th, on rue Taine, is beautiful! If you felt confident (and, the metro is very easy), you could think of both Trauffaut's beautiful Batignolle apt. in the 17th and LuckyLuc's garden apt. in the 11th. Both are lovely and great value. Personally, I don't find 115E/night...'cheap'. I usually look for, and find, apts/studios for 400-600E/week. Here are a few options, in Arrondissements 1-7, for 500-800Euro/week: www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p123510www.tripseurope.com/apartment.php?apt=michellecomtewww.vacationinparis.com/apts/id_112.htmwww.parisattitude.com/apartment.asp?numProduit=114www.vrbo.com/16467www.vrbo.com/133081Have a lovely trip! While Traufaut and Luc's apartments are not in 1-7, they are lovely and close. www.vrbo.com/103254www.rentalapartmentparis.com/
