with Elvis Costello, performing together in an Opera called, "Welcome to the Voice". I was invited tonight, by a journalist friend of mine who had acquired two press tix. BOY, I am really, really glad I did not pay to see that show.
My only regret was that it was not long enough for an intermission, because had it been, Id have been able to leave early. It was horrible.
The script - bad. The choreography - none. The voices - pathetic. The only great thing about the show was the scene in which S and EC do a duet about the vanity of artists. Oh, and a killer pair of C Louboutin pumps.

That's too bad Phread. Sting is OK but I find him boring at best. I don't know much about Elvis but an opera, please. Why can't they stick to what they do best? Do you happen to know when El Divo will be in Paris I'd like to see them if I happen to be there. Another favorite of mine is Pink Martini. We missed them by a week one time. Not that I would have any idea of how to obtain tickets. LOL
Thanks

We went to a Police concert last summer in Montreal and I was amazed both at Sting's voice and his (ahem) "physique"! Can you say yum,yum...........Too bad the opera wasn't good, but you could have always used ear plugs and just feasted your eyes!

Il Divo's Paris concert is April 9, and tickets are now on sale thru their website.

Actually, now that I think of it, our very own Truffaut looks something like Sting, and I know that he has a better Opera voice. Would have been a great improvement!

But here's the question...was it an opera, as in arias and such, or was it a musical *called* an opera to differentiate it from the happy-happy stuff (as in Tommy, which is not particularly happy (like South Pacific or My Fair Lady, but quite good, actually)
I like Sting, and I adore Elvis Costello (and his gorgeous wife Diana Kraal, who is a very successful and talented jazz musician in her own right), so the writing had to be really, really bad to ruin that much talent.

It was a real honest to goodness opera with arias and divas and the like.
The writing was really bad, but also, they don't exactly have operatic voices. They didn't have the power necessary.

If it was a "real" opera, sounds like one that is deservedly forgotten and the producers tried to drum up interest by inappropriate casting . . . . sorry you had a miserable time! (IMO, when opera is good it's fantastic but when it's bad, it's truly horrendous.)

Worse than that.... Costello and a pal wrote the piece themselves!!! Half way through the project they realized that C's voice could never carry the show and then recruited Sting. They must have launched in Paris to save face in the anglo world if things did not go well. Good thing for their reputations, too!
