So today is the day...anyone in Paris raising a toast?? I was there on this day a few times and recall how quickly the grocers got their displays up! And some places with special menus! I'll probably buy a bottle(or two) later..any excuse for a party! ;D

Geordy,
I got a Georges Duboeuf from World Market fresh from the truck. I got home and Tom already had one open - properly chilled (you'll be glad to know, Gitte!) - and this one is a Bouchard Aine et Fils. Fun wine.
I was in Beaujolais at Bagnols in 2006 and it was 5 days of beaujolais - noveau and others. We have to hit all friends my host and hostess have (having brought up there), so the tasting started in the morning and last until bedtime. My, that was hard work!!!!!

hmmmmm........... know what ? I always thought that all the fuss about new-harvest-Beaujolais was a in fact only hype-hysteria and that the wine was undrinkable and sour. But that it was apparently a kind of cult "must-have" for some mysterious reason. So I guess that is wrong ? You can actually drink the new-harvested Beaujolais and like it ? I never tried, so I wouldn't know. Please to enlighten this rural Dane living at the far side of the 27th row of p'taters.

I'm with you, Gitte -- I faithfully bought a bottle of Nouveau every year, ON the Thursday, and have universally been disappointed.
We had a glass with the proprietor of the ferme de volaille from where I'll get my turkey for Thanksgiving, and frankly "grape juice" went through my mind.
I've also been reading that there is much disappointment in this year's release-- with such a cool, wet summer last year, there was just not a way to make very good wine.
I'll take a lovely old Cahors. Bergerac, or Bourgeiulle any day, ta.

It was very odd in Paris.... the quietest BN year since it became such a marketing sensation. Last year the two cafes on my block brought in hay bales and accordian players. This year... Nothing!

Am I the only one who finds BN disgusting? I know the French waiter we had last year agreed with us that it tasted like bottled piss! Can I say that here? And how do I know what bottled piss would taste like>

It is what it is..... Trite but true...no one claims it is a great or even very good wine....after all it is "new"...fruity, lite, fun, and for those of us in the States...it is an inexpensive T-day wine!!! And as I said...any excuse for a party! Phread...less of the hype here this year too...Garnet, a Wine specializing liquor store here, usually would have many cases from various houses. When I purchased mine last Thurs. they only had one variey...today they were out of it!..except for a "green" version..(Laboure-Roi)artificial cork and ...PLASTIC BOTTLE!!! Less of a "carbon footprint"! I had bought a bottle of that at a different place over the weekend(Hey if I can save the environment and drink : oh my word..fizzy, way lite, pretty bad. Georges DuB is the most readably available here but I've got a bottle of Joseph Drouchin Primeur for after the Macy's Parade warming before dinner at Sel et Poirve tomorrow!

I've yet to try the GDB...I went to Garnet to buy another bottle for Thanksgiving and all they had left was the green one! So I wound up with a bottle of the Italian equivalent! A few years back the Muscadet people tried to jump on the BN marketing bandwagon(sort of how the blurb in the NYT's about the event put it!). They sailed an old wooden sailboat across the Atlantic with cases of muscadet in the hold. The boat was moored at the South Street Seaport Pier 17 over a long weekend. You could tour the boat(took a few minutes it was small..no way I would cross the pond in it! ), and they had music, folk dancing, and of course were selling glasses and bottles of muscadet as well as other regional products and oysters, clams, and such! Delightful for lunch hour at the time and after work! Didn't seem to catch on though as it was not repeated.

Anyone have any this year(2010)? Go to any fetes? I got 2 bottles of the GDB(screw top this year! They've been doing that with their large bottles of "house" red and white for awhile) and one Chateau du Souzy. I was surprised at the price...at my fav wine store ,Garnet (Lex and 68th) it was 6.99...usually it is about 2 bucks more at least until after Thanksgiving. Then I saw the GDB at the Chelsea Market for 9.99 yesterday! Had one GDB with porkchops on Thursday. Less interesting than ever I'd say....but again..any excuse for a party! Just read an article where it is described as a good year.....

Well, we went to the tasting at the Alliance Francaise DC last night...I gotta say Jody that your previous description was spot on ;D The BN was just not that great. And, I bought 5 raffle tickets to win a FREE business class trip to Paris PLUS 4 nights in a deluxe hotel. I was so excited and so hopeful that I would win....oooh I was so nervous when the drumroll started...alas, it was not to be But, the cheese and bread were yummy, and we got to speak French and hang out in the beautiful AF library. So not a total loss

Maybe the taste just depends on what quality bottle you have/who the producer was. I was at a bar today and got a glass that tasted much like the "bottled piss/grape juice" previously described but at a restaurant the other night I had bottle that was surprisingly good. It's not my favorite wine but I enjoy sampling all the different varieties of French wine. Vive la différence.

I usually buy at least 4 or 5 different bottles of the beaujolais nouveau, because I truly like young wines with certain dishes (pasta in sauce comes to mind). When I hit the brand that tastes the best, I try to get about half a dozen bottles so that I will have some until the end of the year.
I also like the Côtes du Rhône nouveau but not as much as the Beaujolais.

Oh I agree, I have had some really good Beaujolais in the past. They only had one kind available Friday night, so there you go. If I were in Paris I would make a point of trying as many as possible... ;D

We had some in a restaurant yesterday and I was quite dubious at first after having read Geordy and Sister's comments, but I found it quite good, more subtle than on some previous years. I even ordered an additional glass after we had polished off the pichet . And husband told me to buy a bottle at the supermarket next week. He always wants me to buy some Louis Jadot because he finds him to be the most reliable producer of BN.

We had 3 at the tasting at AF last night,Jean Claude deBeaune, GDB and Damien Dupeuble. deBeaune was the best, IMO. Didn't stay for the vote tally, so don't know who won!

Gitte, it varies from year to year but this year, it is delightful but very light. I wouldn't want it with turkey. The festivities here on the third Thursday of November has slackened because of all the publicity i the early years when the wine wasn't good and had to be drunk within 6 months. That is no longer true. I'm drinking it now and toasting you all. Can't afford to travel these days, so not posting much but aslways think of you.
