Hi Guys, I am only hours away from a wonderful feast,, and I am especially thankful it is NOT at my house this year( as every family dinner and holiday usually is) ... Dad is doing it,, and keep in mind he was a trained chef, so this is no stuffing in a box dinner we are going off to.. I of course am contributing a chocolate cream pie and green beans and a salad.
The chocolate cream pie is to keep the children away from the really " good " desserts,, my dad makes a mean apple tart,, and we don't want to waste it on our 16 and 18 yr old boys who could EASILY eat the entire tart,, no, so we will fill them with cheap cream pie( I "made" it from boxed pudding, yuckers) which they will LOVE,, and then they will not want the delicate flaky apple tart.. ;D ..
Happy Thanksgiving to all other Canadians on this board,!!
PS Dad grabbed some lovely oysters this morning for starters,, yum,, I am truly looking forward to this.!

We had turkey for 15 yesterday (celebrated early so we could still have 2 days off in a row after our entertaining efforts). Hubby brined our 17 pound turkey and grilled it on our Weber BBQ. We had roasted garlic mashed potatoes, herbed mushroom stuffing, "orange stuff" (a mixture of boiled turnip and carrots, whipped together with lots of butter, salt and pepper and turkey broth, so named by my daughter when she was 4 because of the colour ~ tastes a lot better than it sounds), rice, peas, gravy, salad and home made foccachia. My daughter, now 23, also made 2 types of cranberry sauces, including a port and orange flavour, pumpkin biscotti, home made vanilla ice cream and fresh apple crisp. Hubby also made spanokopita (spinach phyllo tart with pine nuts and feta) as one of the appetizers. As you can probably tell, our family basically ate for about 6 hours straight but everyone had a great day and went home well satisfied.
Happy Thanksgiving to all and gobble gobble!!

Wow - You Canadians really know how to celebrate ! I hope you all have/had a wonderful holiday. Joan - I think providing a chocolate cream pie sounds like a wonderful way to keep the apple tart solely for the adults. Great strategy on your part.

Oh my Jo,,, that "orange stuff" sounds yummy,, I noticed a few "non traditional "items on your menu,, is is a safe guess to assume their is some Greek in your family? LOL
Well our feast was great, but, non traditional anyways,, the power went out on the whole of our south island for over an hour , right at dinner time. We had the turkey done, but most veggies were not cooked.
Out came the camp stove and candles,, took a bit longer but everything was delish,, and everyone and everything looked better in the candle light anyways!!!

Joan,
Nope, no Greek in the family, French Canadian on both sides, but Den and I lived in the Greek part of Montreal the first 4 years we were together and ate at lots of little family style Greek places and fell in love with the cuisine. In addition to the spanokopita, Den makes a great moussaka and home made tzaziki too. I also have 2 Italian SILs and grew up in the Italian part of Montreal, so we love that cuisine as well. We both love to cook from scratch and try new recipes. The orange stuff is a family tradition on my side that we've made with turkey since I was a little girl, and having turkey without it just doesn't happen!
A Thanksgiving dinner by candlelight..........now that may be a new tradition for you guys, I'm sure everything looked so Martha Steward-like!

Your orange stuff is just about my favorite veg. In fact I have a rutabaga ( yellow turnip, as my NJ husband calls it) in the frig and will probably do it tomorrow. It's also a regular at our Thanksgiving table.
