I had promised myself that I wouldn't start another off-topic, BUT this is simply too funny to let go. ;D Not a word about China ..... but their English translations on street signs simply ROCK ! If you need a good laugh, go knock yourselves out. Click for a astonishing lesson in CHINGLISHHere are some examples (I am crazy about the first. I can just imagine that clever little chinaman at the keyboard, thinking he got himself an AOK perfect translation !) And for more craziness, here are some Engrish translations (as this special language appears to be called) on signs in other countries. Click for MORE ENGRISH

those are pretty funny! when my friends & i went to china almost 3 years ago, we saw so many of those signs... we thought that we should stay behind and work as sign fixers! and the stuff on packaged goods was just as good... did you know if you used the pearl cream, it'll make your skin "jadey"? LOL

I like the Japanese ones too. You know the words written by someone who hasn't quite grasped how English syntax works (along with many people who speak English as a first language). Not that I should talk cos I can't speak a word of Japanese.
Have you heard the classic, written by a computer in the '60s?
When fed the sentence 'Time flies like an arrow' it came back with 'Fruit flies like a banana'. I suspect this is apocryphal.

OMG Gitte that cream is hilarious!! Well here's something I picked up at one of the hotels where we stayed. It's some sort of bath soak, but the back of it is just a hoot... if you can get thru all of the wordiness! Now I'm sorry I didn't steal from another hotel the little instruction book on how to properly use condoms... which were provided for free. makes me wonder what kind of hotel that is now!! Front back

CC - Definitely apocryphal, it was one of our favorite jokes when I was a kid (along with "be alert - the world needs more lerts").
I would be interested sometime to know how many attempts to translate English to other languages go similarly wrong (remember the Chevy Nova, which had to be renamed in Spanish speaking countries because "no va" means "doesn't go"?)

To say nothing of the Rolls Royce Silver Mist which had to be renamed for the German market because of what Mist means in German. Look it up. I'm not going to lower the tone. Although why should I stop now? Sh . . .

Oh Gitte, you have made me laugh, thank you so much for this post. I was browsing the many Chinglish pages , and was laughing out loud, so much so hubby came in to see what was amusing me so much. Needless to say he joined in. Made me smile today anyway. Thank you.
