If you had only one opportunity to visit Paris ( I'm sure I will be back but not so sure about my travel partner) would you go to Versailles? We have 4 days and they are packed as you can imagine and I left out Versailles but I'm having second thoughts. Help?

I would -- we've been several times, and always seem to find something new -- even if you only wander the gardens (which are amazing), you could fill an entire day.

With only 4 days, forget Versailles. Concentrate on Paris and show your travel partner a great time so she will want to return also! And for your second rental I will give you a free night so you will have extra time and money to do Versailles properly.

I would have to agree with Luckyluc - we went to Versailles for one of the days that we had in 5 days last October. I had been to Paris numerous times before and had never been - I was blown away when I got there but didn't have time to do the gardens, it also took a full day out of my Mums first ever trip and we then rushed some parts of Paris that she really wanted to see . You need plenty of time to do Versailles properly - concentrate on Paris this time and take up Luckys generous offer for your next trip

I have read reports on various boards that Versailles can be 'done' in half a day. Not true! It takes a complete day.

Thanks for the comments on Versailles. I will stick to my original idea to skip it. Luc- thanks so much for the offer and I will take you up on it! I know I will be back ASAP! I will be keeping notes on everything for the next trip and this forum is terrific! Darcy gave me another museum to look up- as if I need more things to do!

chemong - Versailles is definitely a must-do, as is Louvre, but with limited time in Paris, both are skippable on your first trip. They have both been around for so long, so they will most likely be there for you next year too - and the year after that also. Remember: there is never any ending to Paris. Next year, when you come back, you must book a full day for Versailles, not least to visit Marie Antoinette's hamlet (hameau) and the two small châteaux in the park: Petit Trianon and Grand Trianon. Versailles, the palace, the park - it really is an overwhelming, breathtaking place, for its opulence and grandeur - and for the "whoosh" of history which you can strongly feel, if you ignore the other tourists and let your imagination work its magic.

Thanks Gitte I like your idea of spending the day and seeing Marie's hamlet etc. so Versailles will wait for me for next year....as I read the other posts on Paris Blues, I'm sure I will be ready to plan the next trip as soon as I return home.... 23 days to go and I' there
