After two months of serious hunting and a couple of weeks of intense negotiations, I have secured myself a new home in Paris! I'll be moving from the oh too tony and much too expensive Sevres Babylone neighborhood, to the people's 15th. There are more people living in the 15th and than in entire city of Bordeaux and it is the only arron without a single monument. Sounds gloomy, but I am thrilled. Here's why...
My new home is on the 7th and 8th floors of a beautiful art deco building. No more living with those oppressively ornate Haussmanian mouldings that felt like one was inside of a wedding cake at all times. No more surroundings that were so formal one was afraid to slouch in one's own living room. Flat walls and simple details, here we come!
The living room has two generous balconies over looking the roof tops of Paris with plenty of room for a tiny garden of edibles and white flowering plants (white is the best option for night gardens.. in keeping with the city of lights theme) AND my worm composter. The dining room has a 4/5ths view of the Eiffel Tower.
Just downstairs is the Cafe Cosmos, with live Jazz, Tarot reading and an ecclectic belnd of entertainment most nights of the week. It is a true neighborhood joint. Around the corner is an organic bakery and another block down is the rue du Commerce for all my shopping needs. The Grenelle market is a short stroll away, too, but I will miss my Raspail organic market on SUndays.
In any case, you all can look forward to some neighborhood reviews of my new home in the months to come. Oh, and if Mr. Laidback has any restau recommendations in the 'hood, I'd love to hear 'em.
I should mention that I negotiated this flat and have been making all the arrangements from my summer hols in Montreal. So back to the vacation and happy summer, everyone. I'll be back on line a la rentree!!!

Phread - That's such wonderful news. I can't imagine how stressful it must have been for you to search for the perfect place, which you have finally found. Your patience has paid off as this apt. is obviously what you and your girls need. Aside from the lovely views that you will definitely have, I hope this place is a home full of happiness and love. You deserve the best.

Phread, sounds like a wonderful apartment! Balconies, top floors, great view, convenient neighborhood--gee, what more could a girl ask for?! Congratulations on your great find and skilled negotiating! I checked my restaurant map, remembering I had a few places marked in that area, and lo and behold--Le Cosmos is on it (from a previous recommendation by you!). We've eaten at Luna, an Italian place on rue Desaix (pretty good food, nice atmosphere, inexpensive). The only other place nearby that's on my to-do list is Le Café du Commerce--I read a recommendation somewhere saying they had excellent beef (Limousin), but that's just hearsay until I get it straight from one of our experts! Hope you're having a great time in Montreal--enjoy the remainder of your vacation!

Phread, you "done good"; that is my favorite part of the entire, huge 15th. There are many rather soul-less areas of the 15th, but this certainly isn't one of them. You will still be close to a Poilane bakery...different location on Grenelle rather than cherche-Midi, but same products. Rue du Commerce has all the necessities and the Grenelle market on Wed. and Sun. mornings has many of the same merchants as the Saxe market on Thurs. and Sat.
I will only mention restaurants that are in walking distance from you and that I have tried. Père Claude is the place for rotisseried and grilled meats on Motte-Piquet. My fav., which I am sure you know, is the simple, fairly priced Le Troquet across from the Unesco annex on François Bonvin. Thierry Burlot has a lot of talent but when he is not there things can be hit or miss and he has steadily upped his prices since opening a few years ago. We enjoy Bistro Hubert with its open kitchen , copper pots and a reasonable childrens menu.
I haven't tried the big old Café du Commerce due to a disappointing experience by a friend, but it is so close to you that you can try it and let me know.
Is your Café Cosmos the big, bustling café at the corner of Emile Zola? We will have to meet for a celebratory libation(s) there after you get all settled in.

Phread, as you may already know, hubby and I adore that area and always stay there every trip so far. I am green with envy. Don't bother with the Italian restaurant on Grenelle it was terrible this year compared to last. I can't recommend any top notch places as we don't tend to visit them (due to my veggie husband) but we have had some lovely meals in the cafe/bistros. Comptoir Suffren was delightful and inexpensive, we also had a divine meal on Rue Lecourbe, but as we were in company and it was the last night I totally forgot to note the name of the place! (note to self....find out) The Grenelle market has some beautiful produce, remember the those chickens and roast potatoes? Le Motte Picquet metro serves several lines, making the city even more accessible. Oh you lucky spud! ;D

Phread,
Hubby and I have stayed in the 15th twice just off rue du Commerce and LOVE the area. The Sunday Grenelle marche is wonderful. You should love the area. Now I am realy jealous!
Have fun!
