Hi , I am in the process of arranging a meet up with a pen pal of mine that lives near Paris , originally she was going to come into Paris to meet up with us , she has now suggested that in addition to this we may like to have a day trip to Vaux-le-Vicomte and or Fontainebleau with her , any thoughts on which one I should choose or should we do both ? She lives near Vaux-le-Vicomte so would pick us up at Gare de Melun. With only 8 nights in Paris we wasn't going to a day trip but I think it would be nice to do this day trip with her. Alison x

Hi, Ally -- I'd choose Vaux le Vicomte, myself -- it's smaller and less crowded than Fontainebleu, but no less history of it's own. It's a beautiful chateau, and very well maintained by its owner, who ensures that you know that it is privately held (various signs around the property). There's a small transport museum in the stables and a snack bar.
The gardens are incredible and a must-see.
There is also a separate tour (for a euro or two, if I recall) where you can climb up into the dome -- the architecture and structure of the dome are fascinating - -and the view from the top is amazing - you have a bird's-eye view of the gardens from there.
If you want to fill the day, you can still go to Fontainebleu -- the chateau is enormous and the artwork there is very good, and it's a self-guided tour -- although it can be very crowded if there are groupes scolaire there. We enjoyed the gardens there, too, but they're not as amazing as those at Vaux.
