But how does one get one's karma boosted? I'm fascinated by the principle, like being at a posh prep school and having conduct marks. Are karma points related to the number of posts you make?

Karma is awarded at the whim of any/all members (you can do it yourself!), for doing something that delights, makes someone smile, helps someone, or whatever motivation seems appropriate to the person awarding them. Try it yourself!

Chic, you click on the blue "Exalt" button (next to "Smite") to give someone Karma

I don't see a blue button next to smite? What am I missing?

Under each other member's karma number, you will see blue links ("smite" and "karma"). That's where you click.
See, like this . . . .

I see them when I look on this thread. They are right under your karma.

No one has an exalt and smite button under his OWN name. If we did, we could exalt ourselves several times a day. The purpose is to exalt others. The same goes for smiting, but I can't imagine ever wanting to smite anyone on this forum. BTW, once you have exalted someone, you cannot exalt anyone else right away. I'm not sure how long it takes for you to see an exalt/smite button on your screen again.

Yes, not much smiting (if any) occurs here as we have had such a good bunch of posters at OPF! Experience from other sites evidences the possible need/use of a smite button, but happily thus far...we don't seem to have cause to smite! Just not a lot of "meany heads" here!

I still don't get it! I see Exalt and smite in brackets under each posters name. Is the star an exalt? Are green stars for moderators? but no exact/smite under my karma

Mimi - On your screen you can only see exalt/smite for other posters. No one has those buttons for himself. That way we can only exalt or smite other forum members, not ourselves. Each exalt increases the karma, and each smite decreases it. As for the stars, the number of them indicates your title, such as "senior member" in your case, which you get according to the number of posts that you have made. Moderators have different color stars.

Eugh. You've been eating strawberries again, haven't you? ;D
I shall post such a stupendous trip report that half of you will exalt me for it and the other half will smite me for taking up so much cyberspace.
