Have any of you stayed at convents or monasteries? (I'm thinking of the kind opened up to people of all faiths or none, not religious retreats). I have stayed in a couple in Italy and it seems there are also some in French regions - somewhat spartan but very clean places, quieter than your typical youth hostel. Any favourites?

I know what you mean Lagatta, I read about those convent-hotels when looking for accomodation in Florence .
I have never heard about the same thing in France, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist . Unfortunately, a research on Google only brings back results of hotels or B&Bs which names include the words "couvent" or "monastère"...
I know that at least some of the couvents offer retreats that are not religious, just spritual : people just go there for the peace and silence and loneliness, no religion required .

The closest thing I can think of is the hotel located in the hospital, Hotel Dieu. The rates are fairly reasonable given the location right across from Notre Dame.

Lagatta, we haven't stayed at any convents or monasteries during our visits to France, although I know a few people who have. There's a series of books, called "Guide to Lodging in (France's, Italy's, or Spain's) Monasteries" by Eileen Barish. Have seen the one on France in our local Barnes & Noble. It might be a resource for you. The website appears to be primarily a source for purchasing the book, but there are a few photos and descriptions of monasteries in various regions. Here's a link to the photo page. Keep clicking on "Next" at the bottom right in order to see a sampling of monasteries: www.monasteriesoffrance.com/photos.php Jo
