I have to agree with Gitte here about the linen trousers. While I love the feel of linen in warm weather, it looks like I've slept in it before I've even left the house. I can't think of traveling in it. But as far as taking 14 pairs of skivvies...nope. Two pair. One to wear today; one gets hand-washed daily to be worn tomorrow. Repeat cycle tomorrow. Same with bras. But underwear is the ONLY thing I can pack light

Alright...I don't really do that. But it seems like a good idea, doesn't it!!! (In light of poor Joan's overpacking? ? I'm trying to help!!!)

Hey Joan, how about packing light and then doing some clothes shopping in Rome and/or Paris?

"I mean, after you have come home to apt. sweating like a pig ..." Gitte, you just kill me! I don't know who it was who said that ladies don't sweat they just gently perspire, but he/she was wrong.
Dear Denise, you will need more trousers. At least one more pair, supposing it rains? Both you and Joan are travelling really light, my list is much longer (hangs head in shame), and I can't fit my shoes into hubby's because he only takes one spare pair and I need *at least* 3 pairs. However, I learned the hard way that you must be prepared for anything: when we went to London this April all the forecasts said it would be cold. I jettisoned the lovely dress I had for the Royal Opera House and took a pullover (a nice, stylish, cashmere one, but nevertheless a pullover) and trousers instead. It wasn't that cold and I felt really awful about having left my chosen outfit at home. This time I'm taking two nice outfits for the evenings, one with a skirt and top and one with trousers and a jacket as well as a dress for the Opera, that way whatever the weather I won't feel sloppy. That wonderful weather site informs me that temperatures in Paris from this weekend are going to be around 20 max, it's 33 at the moment in Perugia so I expect to be very cool and comfortable. Take more clothes! Take more clothes! That way my list will look less disgraceful!

I am so glad that I am not the only one who has difficulty packing! I have recently been traveling a bit for work, and I am having such a hard time packing! For work I need business formal clothes, but there are occasions where business casual is allowed so I need both types of outfits. And I don't wear work clothes back in the hotel so I need normal casual clothes, and then maybe my co-workers and I will go out somewhere so I need going out clothes...
And I always bring my own shampoo, my face scrub, my foot remedies, my hair straigtener, my hair serum, my makeup bag, etc etc etc The list goes on!
And don't even get me started on shoes!! Flats(Casual & work), heels(brown & black),gym shoes
Packing for Paris will hopefully be easier after packing for work!! Except for the fact I am going in winter time so even the small amount of clothes they will be bulky sweaters and coats....sigh
I may invest in those space saver bags for that trip!

LOL , this thread is so funny..
First, 14 pairs of underpants, no way, I would need 26, and at the size of mine that is 1/2 a suitcase gone right there. Gitte, I will just wash things out, so I am only bringing 4-5 pairs.
I am bringing some wheat coloured linen trousers too, I think they are supposed to be wrinkly aren't they? Mine are old, so nice and soft too, I find new ones are still too itchy and stiff .
Afds,, I think you dress up a tad more then I do, I will only bring one "dress up" dress. It is my black one that can be dressed up or down. I will bring skirts etc, but more casual. I will be travelling more this trip so must pack light. You must not tempt me, unless it is with food, LOL
And the saying is :
Men sweat, women perspire, and LADIES glow!

OK so, keep the cream capris, out go the black linen trousers and in come a pair of dressy white trousers with a dressy pink halter top that is an "outfit" and I could wear to a restaurant. I will then have to take the pink strappy sandals that match. Gitte, I don't do skirts but I have also got the brown dress and high heels for "dressy" which I can also dress down. We will probably not go to more than two restaurants as we prefer too eat in. Don't forget I've got my jeans, and I will include more short sleeved tops. Definitely fourteen pairs of knickers and bras. and three nighties! I'm amazed you think I'm restrained as I thought it looked like alot. Denise love from England

No, Joan, Denise dresses up more! All those undies and nighties! I'm only taking one nightie, I figure with the airconditioning I won't get all piggy ;D I confess, for various reasons I've lost a lot of weight lately which has meant acquiring a completely new wardrobe. Now that I have it, I should wear it, right? And what better place than Paris, fashion capital of the world? Actually clothes aren't the problem, it's those wretched shoes. And we haven't even started talking about handbags

HeeHeee! You make me shoot coffee out of my nose! Packing for work is a bear -- I can pack for 2 weeks in a carryon for vacation, but if I'm working, I need this huge honking beast because suits and high heels just don't pack well! I pack enough for no more than a week, and everything mixes and matches with everything else - a couple pairs of trousers, a couple skirts, and my beloved skorts (skirts with shorts sewn inside) -- a few shirts, and I'm good to go -- plus a fleece jacket just in case and a teeny umbrella. Done. One pair of trainers, one pair of comfy loafers, and a pair of comfy sandals. And undies. Not particularly stylish, but not frumpy either...then we do laundry as needed.

Willow, I just missed your post, you must have to pack tons,, all those situations, yikes.
Afds, Lucky you to need a new wardrobe because you lost weight( although I hope it wasn't for a bad reason, or if it was, you are better now) ... it is fun to shop for clothes when you lose weight( at least I thought so) .
Denise, I have not even thought about packing white or cream bottoms ,, although I have some sharp white capris, I just figure they will get dirty instantly. I do hope I misunderstood your post, you do not in fact have(own) 14 bras do you?? LOL I own like the black ONE the nude ONE the white ONE and the pink ONE ,, and thats it folks, couldn't pack a bra a day if I wanted to.. Perhaps I have been married too long,, ha ha, I remember having " just for the hell of it bras,, " LOL

This thread is hilarious. I always pack for a week to 10 days in a carry on bag! Now you have me thinking I need to take MORE! My rule is if a top doesn't go with EVERYTHING else, I don't take it. I assume people know I have a better selection of clothes waiting for me at home. The only things that get suitcase space if it doesn't match everything are earrings or a scarf. Hmmm...maybe I should break all my rules and take a big suitcase next time! hehe

Now that you mentiion it Joan, you have a point. I think any light colored bottoms would be a problem in Paris. Not only am I a chronic overpacker of clothes, when we stay in apartments I have developed a bad habit for bringing everything imaginable for the apartment. Most of which I never need or use. My husband gets really annoyed by this. He keeps telling me they sell TP in Paris. "But it is not Northern." I whine. LOL

LOL Suzanne, at least it's now common in France to find two-ply TP that doesn't feel like it could double as sandpaper! A friend and I used to swear we could make our fortunes if we just could get an exclusive on importing soft two-ply TP to France . . .

when you're packing for a gite or a flat, find one of those insulated cooler bags that is styled like a tote. In that, put your linens and other necessities for your temporary digs. Then you have one bag that has all of the house stuff in it -- and the cooler bag holds your purchases from the grocery or marche.
I have an old eyeglasses case that holds a small Leatherman tool, a waiter's corkscrew, and my folding Laguile picnic knife (I can open a bottle of wine and slice saucisson and cheese and apples...the necessities of life!) I buy a pill minder (that plastic thing with compartments for each day of the week to keep track of meds) -- with the biggest compartments I can find - and fill each compartment with my favourite spices and herbs -- cinnamon, garlic powder, thyme, bay leaves, etc....then I have plenty to cook with, without having to buy whole jars. Wrap it all well in plastic wrap so it doesn't spill, and you have a mini spice rack that travels with you. These tuck into the insulated bag, too -- so it goes in checked luggage so TSA doesn't pitch a hissy fit.
