Hi, I'm new to this board - and forums (fora?) in general. Hope to find folks with expertise to share my excitement over an upcoming trip to Paris. It's not going to be until sept. 2009 but vacation planning is so much fun. The posts I've read today are so very interesting and have been helpful already. Am going with my husband to celebrate several major events, not the least of which is our 30th anniversary. Romance is still a big deal for us and Paris! ... sigh. My one and only trip to Paris was in 1971 and on a strict budget...of course it was quite a bit less expensive at that time (wasn't everything?). The vast number of hotels is daunting, so via this forum I was led to a number of apartment rental sites. I think we've decided to rent something on the Ile St. Louis. Does anyone have advice on this? We'll be staying in Paris around a week and would like to make a two-day trip to the country but don't want to go too far. Saw Fontainebleu on the web and it looks gorgeous. We love to hike and walk and get some fresh air - can anyone out there give any recommendations with respect to that excursion? Next thing we want to include is some time at the horse races at Longchamps. I think it's open in September, but don't really know. Well, I hope to hear from you soon. And thanks!

Hope to find folks with expertise to share my excitement over an upcoming trip to Paris. Hi Laurel and welcome to the forum. Getting people on this forum excited over your trip will be the least of your challenges. ;D It will be a very exciting trip for you and your husband. There is a great thread already on suggestions for day trips out of Paris, so make sure you take a look. Mez

Hi laurel! You have definitely come to the right place if you're looking for people to share your enthusiasm with you. The fact that you've begun planning your trip more than a year in advance proves that you have a lot in common with some of the posters here. In fact, several of them even have a future trip outlined before an earlier trip has taken place.

Welcome Laurel! You have definitely come to the right place to share your excitement about Paris... On my first trip to Paris I stayed in a studio on the Ile St Louis. I don't know that I'd stay in that particular apartment again, but I do think that it was a VERY romantic and magical place and I think you'll love it. One of our members Becky has stayed in some apartments there and hopefully will recommend a particular one - the agency she used is here: www.guestapartment.com/Keep us posted on your plans - we are all obsessed so you'll fit right in ;D

Hi Laurel, and welcome to the forum! Sistereurope is correct, I really enjoy staying on Ile St Louis and have been getting apartments there off and on for more than ten years. I do use Guest Apartment Service quite often although there certainly are others on the island as well.
I like GAS because it provides a level of service that far exceeds other agencies I've used - they are located right on the island, and offer concierge-type service which can be very helpful. It's true they are not inexpensive, but having just come back from a stay in a budget place (with Vacation in Paris) I can say with assurance that you get what you pay for. On the other hand, if you're a person who would rather have an inexpensive apartment and spend the money on high end lunches, or lots of shopping, or excursions, or whatever, there are lots of less costly properties out there.
We will have lots of fun helping with questions you may have, so please do ask away!

Laurel, one of our members (Susanb) was looking at apartments/studios on Ile St Louis, but I'm not sure what she ended up deciding to do. Hopefully, she will see this and give you her feedback about it, and you also can get a first-hand report from her about wherever they decided to stay.

WOW - I've never "joined" a forum before and cannot believe how wonderful it is. Thank you all so very much for making me feel welcome and passing on such good info. I'm blown away. It's going to take some time for me to learn how to negotiate the posting process but it'll be worth the effort, for sure. Merci beaucoup! Next stop is Guest Apartment Service.
