Le Louvre has decided to modernize its guiding systems, this being part of a multimedia modernization plan that stretches until 2020 . So there is a new audiguide, which looks like an i-Pod, with headphones and a stick like a Palm's one . With the new guide in hand, visitor can choose between five routes : French collections, Italian collections, Antique (= Oriental+Egyptian+Greek) collections, masterpieces and architecture of the Louvre . By the end of 2008, six new routes will be added . Each route lasts from 45mns to 2 hours, depending on the visitor's wishes . Using the little "stick", the visitor can adapt his own visit within a route, but he can also go wherever he wants and use the audioguide as an interactive map . Some of the museum's art pieces now bear a number which, when typed on the guide, gives you access to specific info about this piece . The article that I read also says that commentaries are much more lively than they used to be . There are also routes for short-sighted people and for people who cannot cope with stairs . Also written comments for deaf people . And then there is a route for the kids through the Egyptian department . BTW, I really recommend this department, which is really remarkable . Here is the link to the new website which is dedicated to this recent and the future multimedia developpments in the Louvre . This site is in French only, but of course the guides offer several languages . monguide.louvre.fr/index.php?p=visiteAdulte
