My S/O had a conference here a few years back. as It was around the time of a scheduled March trip I decided to meet him there for a weekend before heading to Paris. Easy..catch the TGV right at CDG!
We stayed at a Mercure Hotel..quite lovely view of the old town. It has a different feel from alot of French towns..very close to Belgium, with a Flemish influence. A Nortre Dame Church to explore, great Arts Museum, Citadel just outside of City. We took a walking tour booked at tourist office which was very informative and fun! Relaxing exploring the old town. A great seafood restaurant at the back of a beautiful old tiled fish market.
Food is great....flemish influence again. Fish waterzoo, moules frites, local cheeses all over everything..munster..not to be confused with what you might find in your deli or supermarket..this is a STRONG cheese! Also maroille which is used in many dishes and is also a hefty cheese! Chicory is used alot in sauces..and desserts! Had i chicory sauce on ice cream and a creme brulee! Quite tasty!
Had one dinner at La Chicoree !
Sleepy feel on Sunday. Stopped at a cafe off the main square for lunch....most places closed..wanted a baguette sandwich..no more baguettes! Had a croque on sliced bread instead. Once they run out...bakeries closed!!!
Heading back to Paris on St. Patrick's Day. Passed Irish bar on way to Gare. S/O wanted to stop for a pint. Me..being a Virgo..let us get to the station! Well , train a bit delayed ..and the cafe in the station called O'Conways! Had our pints and for me Chicken McCormick! He had Irish Stew...I remarked it probably wouldn't taste like in Ireland..he said he was counting on it..the French are great with stews! He was right!
