Does anyone know if you can still cash American Express Travellers Cheques at the Post Office in Paris? I was able to do so in 2005. Thankyou!

Ladyjicky, I sure don't know. I haven't used travelers checks for years. I'm sure someone will come to the rescue with an answer tho.

I'd be surprised if it's possible any longer. There is the American Express office near Opéra, though. I would certainly think they'd cash their own travellers' cheques (especially since nobody else in Paris will take them!)

Lady, why do you want to use travellers cheques anyway ?
Credit cards are so much more convenient, plus the exchange rate on credit cards is MUCH better than the one on travellers cheques - at least this is true for travellers cheques bought in France .

There has been lots of conflicting information re: which way is best to maximize your money while traveling. The consensus seems to be that, unless your bank offers free services, using an ATM and/or credit cards is the most advantageous. I use a credit card for major purchases (around $100 or more) and get spending money every few days from the local ATM. I keep all my credit card and ATM receipts so that I can figure out what I've spent when I get home. With the advent of ATM's, Traveler's Checques are getting to be a thing of the past. Many establishments won't accept them any more. Finding a place to cash them would be a time intrusion on my vacation...but that's just me and my humble opinion . And don't forget to notify your bank and credit card companies that you'll be traveling. Very important!

Last summer I received AmEx Traveler's Checks from so co-workers as a going away gift and a bon voyage gift. I honestly had no clue as to how I could use them! I ended up taking them with as a safety buffer, but I never used them. I brought them back and cashed them at my bank instead! I used my Bank of America debit card instead!

I am a rare person I guess but - I hate to use a atm!!!I know people watch you and its so easy to get rolled. I did cash them at the post office in 2005 - i buy them in euro. I know the place near the Opera but - unless you have a room nearby and can there on opening time - Ooooh the line! LOL I know - I shall be in the Louvre as a exhibit under the title of "old fashioned crazy Aussie Woman , who hates ATM'S" LOL

Ladyjicky, I know you specifically asked about post offices, but have you asked an Amex office here? I know they could definitely tell you where the Amex offices are in Paris. Perhaps they can answer your questions about the post office.

I remember when it used to be at the top of the Champs Elysees near the Arc de Triomphe. I noticed last year that it's not there any more...but it could have been gone for ages since I don't go to that part of Paris very often.

They moved location about a year or so ago. There's an office on rue Scribe and one on Place Victor Hugo.
