I am to the point of needing to finalize my hotel choice. The one place that looks like such a great deal is the Hotel Mansart in the 1st. The problem is, its not listed in any guidebook, and my travel agent doesn't have it listed through any of the booking companies that they go through. Trip Advisor shows great reviews of the place, and I have even corresponded with one of the review writers who told me good things. If I choose this hotel, I will have to do it on my own since my travel agent can't book it. Then I don't have the backing of AAA behind me if the place ends up being a clunker. Do you think hotels ever post false reviews to make themselves look more enticing? I'm getting paranoid here, but this is a lot of money! Does anyone remember ever seeing this hotel? Its located on Place Vendome in the 1st. Thanks!

It has very good reviews on Parisby also. I've booked thru them with no problems. I don't know if they have any sort of guarantees. In fact, I didn't know AAA had any either.

I have a good friend in CA who knows the hotel well. She has stayed there and thinks very highly of it. Next door to the Ritz.
I could ask her if she would mind if I gave you her e-mail address, if you would like, and you could communicate directly.

:)Thanks so much for the helpful words! Demarias, I'm not sure that AAA offers any real guarantee, but I know if they booked me and I ran into a problem, I could call them and they would be on the case! If I book on my own, I could just be left standing there with the luggage and my mouth hanging open! Gracejoan, thanks so much! That is EXACTLY what I needed to hear. An actual person with knowledge of the place! Maybe its a real hotel after all!

Golden Mama, I have never used a travel agent or AAA to book a hotel in Paris, I just find the hotel by word of mouth, and / ta reviews, then I google it and look for more reveiws on other sites,( there are usaully reviews on many other sites) . I have booked at least 4 hotels this way and encountered no surprises. The Hotel Mansart is well mentioned many times on many boards I go on, so I would relax and book on my own( like I always do, LOL ) .

:)Gracejoan-- thank you so much! I have been in contact with your friend, and she has told me great things about the place. My mind is at ease!
Joan1-- thanks for the words of encouragement. Paranoia reigns supreme in my mind when I'm dealing with foreign vacations and lots of money! I think I'm more concerned with getting there and having them tell me they have no record of my reservation, than I am about the actual hotel. There's a lot of security having those documents in-hand from the travel agent!

I'm glad that you contacted Jean about the hotel. I have been trying to get Jean to join this forum...she is a lovely person, with a lot of knowledge. She can be very helpful with "Riviera" area, as she spends a lot of time there with French friends.
We were co-hosts together on the "old" Bonjour Paris site. Have become great friends, but have yet to meet in person! She lives in CA and I am in western NC. One day we may be in France at the same time!
Enjoy your planning! I always say that is really half the fun! Direct contact with the hotel is the way to do it.
Joan
