Hello all My girlfriend and I are heading to France (mainly Paris) for a month on Apr. 24th. I am planning on proposing to her at the Temple of Love at Versailles and was thinking of going there on the first Monday we are there. I realize the castle is closed on Monday, but I believe the garden and Marie Antoinette's village are open, correct? I was hoping the gardens might be a little less crowded on a Monday. Plus, we will be going again on a Saturday to see the fountain show and tour the castle. I was wondering what entrance I have to use to get in? I will be arriving by RER which lets you off by the front entrance. Can you still get in that way or do you have to go way down to the other entrance by Marie Antoinette's hamlet? If so, do you just walk or is the another way to get there? Thanks! Rick

I can't answer your questions, but kudos on an awesome place to propose. Happy Birthday too. Thank you, and thank you! I was originally planning on doing it on the waterlily bridge at Giverny (Monet is my girlfriend's favorite painter), but we aren't going to be going there until later in the trip and I am anxious to give her the ring. I also thought Giverny might be less romantic with the crowds. Hopefully all will go smoothly

The RER stops at the station which is a couple of hundred meters away. When you come out, go right and at the next main intersection turn left and you will see Versaille in front of you. The entrances are a little confusing, but your ticket (depending on what you get) will tell you which one to go into. The gardens are beautiful (my favourite part of Versaille) and down by Marie Antoinette's there weren't as many people as near the castle. The walk down is wonderful and you can then look over the end of the lake which is so far away you can't even see the castle.
Congratulations on the upcoming event, you have picked a wonderful spot.

What a lovely place to propose! We went on Monday by mistake, but we had a nice day in the gardens and we rode on the little train all round the grounds. After we walked to the town and had afternoon tea in a little cafe. Grunbluk is right, its just a short walk to the chateau entrance from the station. Nowhere was crowded, and it is a lovely memory. Your girlfriend will remember it forever. Lots of luck, hope you have good weather. At the moment here in England spring has arrived today and France is not that far away so I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Denise Love from England

Merci everybody! What I was really wondering is if you can get in the main entrance on Mondays... I am guessing that you can indeed enter the gardens from the same entrance you would use to go to the palace. There appears to be another entrance by the Domaine de Marie Antoinette. If not, I will figure it out when we arrive. Yes, the weather looks like it will be quite spring-like our first weekend there ;D It is supposed to cool a bit on Monday, but only a slight chance of rain. Hopefully it will stay that way. If not, a little rain will not hurt, we are not made of sugar This is our first trip to Europe, so obviously, we are quite excited!

I wish I could answer your question, Rick, but I have no idea if the main gates are open on Mondays. Maybe someone else will see this and know the answer. Good luck with the proposal tho--what a romantic way to propose! Your sweetie is one lucky girl!

I loved reading how anxious you are to give your girlfriend the ring. How sweet of you! I certainly wouldn't object to seeing a photo of her hand with that sparkling new piece of jewelry - hint, hint. ;D

I am actually going to try and video the actual event for posterity. I am going to tell her I want a photo of us kissing at the temple. I have a little camera that does video also so I will put it on its little tripod, run up to give her a kiss , but instead take a knee and propose to her. She will be VERY surprised! Don't worry though, a "Yes" is a sure thing... I think

The castle is closed but the park and gardens are open on Monday at 8am and closed at 8h30pm.
Be sure to hide the ring careful going through airport security you would not want to spoil the surprise effect!

"What I was really wondering is if you can get in the main entrance on Mondays" When we went on Monday we went through the main gate. we approached from the very impressive front. Follow Grunblacks directions from the RER station. There are shops along the way and a wide boulevard as I remember. Not long now. Denise Love from England
