In a week we (Australia) celebrate ANZAC Day, our commemoration marking the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. It's also the day we commemorate all service men and women who have fought to defend our and other countries.
A couple of our news networks will be in France, based at the Somme as part of the commemoration. I have not had the opportunity to visit the Somme and was wondering if anyone else had.

I would bet that Demarais has been there. She and her husband have been to every WWI site in France, I'm sure.
If she doesn't post here by tomorrow, I'll nudge her.

Yes we've been to the Somme 2 or 3 times, also Verdun, Ypres (Ieper)Vimy , really almost all of the sites in France and Belgium. The emotion can be overwhelming, much much more than the Normandy beaches
My husband's uncles all fought in WWI and we visited his one uncle's grave outside of Albert. His father was in the Canadian army..the US didn't join in fast enough for him so he went to Canada. 2 of his uncles were in the British army and the other was in Canada when the war broke out so he enlisted there instead of returning to England.
We've been in Paris on the 11th of Nov and the parade and ceremonies are really impressive. We'll be there again this year for it.

Hi Megan, unfortunately I didn't, only the end of the march we have in Adelaide. We have aimed to make a trip to France for the 100yr anniversary in 10 years and next year get to the dawn service where ever we are. Our 5 year plan is to do the kokoda trek.
