One of my favorite resources for Paris trip planning in the past has been the online Paris Yellow Pages. They used to have a proximity feature that I could use to discover services near a particular address, starting with the one closest to the address. So when renting an apartment, for example, it was great for discovering the closest neighborhood grocery stores, pharmacies, phone stores, etc. All one had to do was check off the service desired, and you'd get a map with numbers identifying specific locations (in proximity order to the address entered) and a list of the services with their addresses, phone numbers, and websites if they had one. Ever since the Yellow Pages website was redesigned (about a year ago?), I haven't been able to find the same proximity feature or an updated version. The best workaround I've been able to figure out is to enter a category, e.g, épiceres fines, and an arrondissement. That produces a general list with a map, but it is not in proximity order to a specific address. For those familiar with the online features of the Paris Yellow Pages, am I missing something? www.pagesjaunes.fr If not, does anyone know of another internet resource that might produce the same or similar results? As an aside, there is a neighborhood map (plan de quartier) feature on the RATP website that covers some items, e.g., post offices, police stations, but it doesn't cover as many categories as the former proximity feature of the Paris Yellow Pages, and it doesn't list phone numbers. www.ratp.fr

Metz, I know exactly what you mean--I was bummed out when Pages Jaunes changed their format, too. You can do similar searches on Mappy.com tho, just takes some playing around with it. Start off typing in an address under "Plan", then from there you can take a virtual walk up and down your street by clicking on the picture that loads at the bottom left of the map (much like the old Pages Jaunes used to let you do). You can also type in "restaurant", "boulangerie" or whatever in the box under "Marques et Enseignes" to find local businesses. You can click on the symbols at the top right of the map to show bus stops, metro stations, etc. Another site I like to use is Google Maps. I start with my Paris address, then use the "Search Businesses" feature to find nearby services and shops.

Annette, thanks so much for your suggestions. Have been exploring both Mappy and Google Maps. Of the two, at first blush I think I prefer the Google Maps format for identifying places near an address by business category. Just explored pharmacies and bookstores, and I know I'll be spending hours roaming around the site for other categories. ;D

You're welcome! Did you notice on Google Maps you can create your own map (My Maps) to save all the fun places you find?! You can mark the spots on your map with a knive & fork for restaurants, shopping bags for stores, etc. It's almost as addicting as this forum!
