Hi Paris bloggers, I know that this is a Paris blog...but I'm off to San Francisco on Friday and if memory serves, one of you is quite familiar with that lovely city I hope you don't mind me asking here, but I was hoping that you (and everyone on the Our Paris board) would share some pithy thoughts on your favorite hidden (or not so hidden) gems in Northern CA. We're spending 2 nights in Glen Ellen, 3 in Forestville in a house on the Russian River, and 4 in a rented apartment in the Noe Valley neighborhood. DH went to Stanford...but that was 20 some years ago and I'm sure SOME things have changed. As for me, I've been to Europe but have only made it west as far as Ohio! So I'm excited...but I have to admit that when I read the forums, part of me is wishing I were jetting off to Paris...I planned this trip when we were planning our Dec trip to Paris. So tell me that I'll love San Francisco ALMOST as much...and thanks for letting me highjack the board for a bit!

Hello Sister, Phread is from San Francisco and I am sure she would love to help. Today being the beginning of the Jewish Passover she might not be around her computer so much...

Hi, Sister. Phread lived in SF for quite a long time (I think she grew up there). Unfortunately, she dropped her laptop and is now having to use her daughter's which doesn't have wifi. So....her availability is somewhat limited. Hopefully, she'll show up later today with some answers for you.
G and I went to SF a few years ago on the spur of the moment. I don't really have that many esoteric recommendations, but I can tell you that we really enjoyed the ferry/tour to Alcatraz and that we had a fabulous dinner at a restaurant called Garibaldi's. We also did a trip to the Muir Woods to see the sequoias and stopped for lunch in Sausalito.

Oh where to start...running in the Presidio, taking picutres under the GG Bridge, dim sum in Chinatown (actually, ANYTHING to eat in Chinatown), the boat to Sausalito, riding the cablecars, Lombard Street...San Francisco is a lot like Paris for me in that wandering around is most of the fun. I bet you'll love it!

thanks for the speedy replies - I value your input, as I do believe that members of this board have similar sensibilities , which is why I posted! I will await Phread's return to the computer (and wish her a very happy passover in the meantime)

My computer died. It was an accidental homicide. Blame it on the 13 year old. Ugh. Anyway about SF:
Me, too!!! No kidding, we leave Paris Friday for ten days in the Bay Area followed by 5 in the Grand Canyon area. I lived in Noe Valley and will be there partying all this weekend! Emmy Spaghetti Shack and the Bayshore Flea Market are two of my personal must Do's this weekend. Then there is the Market at the Ferry Building on Sat. am. And, because you love Paris, head to Bar Tartine, a California-French fusion restaurant on Valencia. If it is nice out there is a Middle Eastern Restaurant on Mission Blvd with a rooftop bar... FAbulous view.
I also love Greens restaurant for the view. And hiking out at Crissy Field. Be sure to check out the new De Young in Golden Gate Park and Yerba Buena Center in SoMa. OH!!! I love going to Jeremy's for discount designer fashions. It is at South Park, near a very French sandwich joint called the Butler and the Chef. The walk from Jeremy's to the cafe iis a real treat. Really love that llittle square. Let me know if you have any other questions. Now, back to the kitchen and my Matzah Ball Soup! Cheers, all.

See, I knew that there was a connection to this board - we'll probably pass one another at SFO! Anyway, thanks for taking a matzah ball (I thought it was matzo?) break to give me the info.
Tartine was on my list - the other spots I'd never heard of so it's all great. My husband has a good friend who lives near the castro (I think)...maybe I can sneak off to shop while they visit...
We're splashing out by having dinner at the Dining Room at the Ritz (I had to go and buy a new dress and everything) So I need to keep the other meals cheap! Otherwise I'll NEVER get to return to Paris...
Sorry about your computer disaster. I'm lucky that my job gave me a laptop, cause our 15 year old boy went through a phase where he kept looking at internet porn and we still can't get rid of the viruses on our home machine - yuck!!!!

Next time in SF, do try Boulevard restaurant (especially the pork tenderloin). It's a Belle Epoque look, and really wonderful food (also across the street from Hotel Vitale, which is great and just down from the Ferry Plaza food/culinary shopping market).
