The famous "Armée Eternelle" marches in to La Pinacothèque (Place de la Madeleine) offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to marvel at one of the 20th century's major archaeological discoveries. Built for China's First Emperor, Qin Shihuangdi, to help usher him into the afterlife, this astounding life-size terracotta army of warriors and their horses was first discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a well in Xi'an in China's Shaanxi province. Dig by dig, thousands of terracotta warriors were uncovered, remarkably well preserved under the ground despite dating back more than 2000 years. Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors journey to the site in Xi'an where more than 6000 soldiers are open to public view - each facing East. Some 20-odd warriors are on display in the French capital alongside a collection of precious objects and artefacts dating back to the Qin dynasty. Exhibition is open from 10:30-18:00, every day, from 15 Apr - 14 Sep 2008. Musée de la Pinacothèque 28, place de la Madeleine 75008 Paris www.pinacotheque.com/www.whatsonwhen.com/sisp/index.htm?fx=event.detail&event_id=184992en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terracotta_Armyuk.youtube.com/watch?v=dNlcX3_ujnM&feature=relatedThis is how it looks in China. It must be a truly breathtaking experience to see them all. Think of how old they are and of the stories they tell - if only our crude, undiscerning ears were able to hear them speak.

Wow, Gitte - you are the best - thanks so much for posting this info. I just read an article about the terracotta warriors and wondering how I could manage a trip to China to see them - a trip I have wanted to make for a long time and hopefully will one day. In the meantime, I know I will enjoy seeing this exhibit so much.

*!#@*....I miss it by a month! I've always been intrigued by the terracotta warriors, too. I got gyped out of a trip to China a few years ago, so seeing this exhibit would have been cool.

Oh Gitte! You are such a wealth of resources! I am so glad that I found this forum - my education continues. September in Paris is still unreachable for me but I haven't given up. I am coordinating a conference in mid October and that 6 weeks is our busiest time.
Thank you for this information. It would be lovely to see the end of the exhibit.

That should be a very worthwhile exhibit for those of you who will have the opportunity to see it! Going to Paris and seeing such a display is certainly less complicated than traveling all the way to China. I just wonder how they decided which 20-odd warriors get to go to Paris.

Coincidence..right after Gitte posted this yesterday I was leafing through April's "The Atlantic" magazine and there is a poem that references the warriors! "The Day I Saw The Emperor's Clay Soldiers" By Jonathan Musgrove..a poet, teacher, and poultry farmer(!) who lives in Virginia.
Not planning any trips to China anytime soon so didn't think I'd get to see them..now maybe I'll get to see at least 20!

I wonder if the soldiers are already in France? The Tibet/Olympics /etc. situation and World leaders reactions, i.e. Sarko's comments reported yesterday, might jeopardize their travelling.

The Terracotta Soldiers are on a big tour.. many articles around. They have already been in London, Berlin (I think)..they will be in the US later. In Paris til mid September.
I may take my grand daughter and husband in April. The exhibition will still be on when I am there in September, too.
The tickets are daily with times for them, per the website.
Always many things going on in Paris. The websites seem to do a good job of having them all listed for easy access to the information.

They are in London until the first week in April. I'm assuming they will go from there to Paris.
We tried to see them last month but didn't have pre-booked tickets and they only released a few hundred more each day. The day we tried the line must have had 500 people in it!
So book ahead!

Yes, there have been long lines...google has it all, re London.
I have Paris friends checking on tickets for grand daughter. Will see what happens. For me, I can wait for fall tickets....
I have friends who did the real site on a China tour. They had a giant statue copy shipped to them.
I had thought about going to China..but I am not a tour person, in any way....I don't think I would want to go to China on my own..sooo, would have to see things like this when they are on tour.

I had the good fortune to see and photograph the Terracotta Warriors in Xian when I was in China in 2004 and 2005. By all means make every effort to see them if you can.
In 2004 I had the chance to meet the farmer on whose property he made the discovery of the Terracotta Warriors.
More and more research is being done of this national treasure. Pit 1 and 2 were open when I was there with plans being made for opening Pit 3.
