It's wonderful poured over a cavillion mellon! That is so true if you are there during Cavaillon melon season. Normally I don't care too much for sweet wines, but a good Beaumes de Venise is like distilled honey, none of the syrupyness of some others; it may not be the same caliber as the great Chateau d'Yquem, but for the price it is hard to beat as an accompaniment to foie gras and as Mimi stated Cavaillon melon, or just as an aperitif.

Oh really, is Bédoin SOOO close to Beaumes de Venise ? I had no idea ... (eyelids fluttering) ;D ;D . Beaumes de Venise is my favourite wine . 2nd comes Alsacian Gewürtztraminer . I don't like any other of the sweet whites that I have tasted so far : Côteaux du Layon, Monbazillac, even Sauternes (although I have never tasted Chateau Yquem, but my husband had me taste some reputed others) ... To me, many of those have hardly any taste, mostly sugar . BdV has so much perfume ! When I have a very informal girls' dinner at some friends' place, I often bring with my very own chilled bottle of BdV, which I enjoy on my own while my friends are all set upon the champagne ... Anyway . Thank you for the eating tips in Gigondas and Chateauneuf-du-Pape Sister, since I am sure that we will visit those towns : whenever there is some good wine to be tasted or purchased, my husband is to be found somewhere nose down on the trail . Laidback, I saw on the map that Caromb is very close to Bédoin indeed . I haven't started looking at my guidebooks yet and we are not familiar with the area, so I would be grateful for your recommended day trips (although our "day trips" may be more "half-day" ones if the weather is very hot as it can be in those non-seaside Southern areas in the summer) . I already knew about Bédoin market, and I am quite disappointed since it is on Mondays, and our first (out of 2) Monday there will be the 14th of July, so there are chances that we may be deprived of our first market day .

Anne, I am with you on the Beaumes de Venise...it was definitely represented in the 2 cases that we brought back!
If your husband likes Chateauneuf du Pape, I recommend tasting in the cellar of Domaine de Pegau. It's this really tiny basement room on the main street into town. We had a fun time talking to the owner/grower...he was a real character, and he had the most interesting French accent I've ever heard. The wines were excellent and for us a real bargain.

How did you get the two cases home?

umm, let's PRETEND that we bought an extra suitcase and wrapped the bottles carefully in our dirty clothes (socks worked especially well). Not one broken bottle. Alas, except for the Chateauneuf du Pape that we've stashed in the cellar, most of it is gone already!!

Thank you for your help Sis and Jim ! Leaving tomorrow early morning . Still have quite a few things to finish, as per our Andy's checklist . Traffic forecasts for tomorrow in Lyon and the Rhône valley are absolutely dreadful, but then they usually are so for most Saturdays from early July till end of August . If things go well enough, tomorrow late afternoon we will be chilling out from the journey in our gîte's swimming pool . I will sure post pictures of the area when back . See you in two weeks' time !
