jcjflorida - No wonder you fell in love with that place! BTW, I love that little white kitty with the different color eyes. He/she reminds me of one that we had years ago.

Gitte, maybe we could rent a large house in Provence for "solo" forum travelers, and then it would be an option for you. I know that I would love to go back to Provence but my husband and daughter want to go other places. I am sure we could fill a house easily!
Shoesy, the little white cat was adorable. We were told not to feed her but we are such cat people and could not resist. She came by everyday. The ducks came by too. I am sure the animals have us tourists pegged as easy targets.

jcj, Gitte and I have talked about this very thing offline! I'm sure she won't mind my saying that we are both up for this in 2009, since we both have 2008 planned, or at least the money has been allocated! ;D Perhaps others would like to do it this year.
We also talked about the possibility of a couple of solo travelers doing a road trip together somewhere in France. Do you think the travelers would still be speaking to each other at the end of the trip? ;D
Shall we start a new thread on this 'chez nous' project?

Darcy, jcj and Gitte - Please keep me posted on this . I would love both options (house / road trip), but it all depends on the DATES as far as I am concerned because of my kids .

The pictures on this thread are making me so nostalgic! We "lived" in Aix for a month, and these photos match some of my favorite spots - my favorite fountain/courtyard, my favorite square where we had lunch in the same cafe several days a week with the best view around, etc.
We also spent a weekend in L'Isle at a great little B&B called Les Carmes (highly recommended, going back this June!), so love those pictures too. Okay, I'm officially becoming a forum addict! ;D

Before my husband died, we always spent part of our vacation time in Provence. Lourmarin was one of our usually day trips because of a few restos and my favorite shop, COTE BASTIDE. Expensive but worth it. I love their fragrances and house products, and linen bags.

hi anne, i enjoyed your pictures from the luberon! i was there in fall of 2002 and fell in love with the area! i did go to the market at isle sur la sorgue. we got there early, around 8:30 or 9 and that gave us a decent amount of time to scope the market (the "once around" as i call it) and then make the purchases! definitely a great place to buy linens!! <sigh> there's also a good market in st. rémy on wednesdays, but it's not an antique market. here's a pretty good list of the markets in provence. www.beyond.fr/a/calmktsday.htmlhere's a pic of a charcuterie in pernes les fontaines. PLF is known for their trompe l'oeil facades. we stayed at a gîte just outside town called la nesquiere. the dinner we had at the house was the best meal we had all week there!

Anne, through the years we have rented for extended periods throughout Provence and have a rather large collection of info on the area. If you are interested in markets and restaurants, I will be happy to PM you what would be applicable for the particular area in which you will be staying.

Apparently you have to size each picture! I am learning something new everyday. Hopefully, I'll figure it all out.
The first picture is a sweet lane in Bonnieux, the second is a shop in Roussillon, and the third is the terrace of our B&B in Pernes les Fontaines. I WANT TO GO BACK!

Wonderful photos. If one is interested in Fine Dining, in Aix, Closerie des Vilolettes. Lourmarin is one of our favorit stops for lunch and an excuse to visit one of my favorite shops, "Coté Bastide." Isle has tons of Brocante shops besides the Sunday market. favorite shops there are Michael Biehn(he also has written several books) whose a famed collector, Coté Cour, Mick and Gerald Nicord, both located on th Ave. quartre-Otages. Recommended dining , Le Jardin de Quai located near the train station. The chef/owner was formally at the Hotel Mirande in Avignon. The Flea market in Villeneuve-lez-Avignon on Saturday morns is more in my budget.

Anne - You will be very close to some of my favorite wine villages: Gigondas and Chateauneuf du Pape! Oh, how I loved it there! ;D Anyway, in the town of Chateauneuf du Pape we had a really lovely lunch at this restaurant: www.vergerdespapes.com/A woman in the tasting room recommended it to us and we were glad that she did. The food was good...and the view!! Sigh... Les Florets in Gigondas is also supposed to be very nice - it was high on my list but we never made it there. If you go to Avignon (which I really loved), a nice restaurant that's not too expensive is La Fourchette. We were lucky to get a table without a reservation but we had to share...luckily our tablemates were a very nice couple from London. We had a nice meal with some great wine. travel.nytimes.com/travel/guides/europe/france/provence-and-the-french-riviera/avignon/restaurant-detail.html?vid=1154654635810And if you visit the Palais de Papes, say hi for me. That's where we spent the day tasting wine at the Rhone Exaltation...and where my husband thought he was the pape by the end of the day ;D (We were allowed access because of the wine tasting and ended up taking our own private tour of the palace...unescorted!)

anne i'm jealous... i love provence. but then again i loved just about everywhere i've been in france! if you are a fan of muscat, near gigondas is a village called beaumes de venise. they have some amazing muscat and i am not a fan of sweet wines normally.

Ah-ha! That's IT! How did I overlook that? Anne - did you choose Bédoin so that you can be close to Beaumes de Venise?!?!
(Kittyhead...our dear Anne is a already a major fan of that lovely wine, if I recall correctly ;D)

Thanks for your offer of information Sister and Laidback ! We will be staying in Bédoin, Vaucluse (at the foot of Mt Ventoux) . Anne, We have rented town houses in Caromb, Sablet and Beaumes de Venise, all with in spitting distance of Bedoin. I have more pdf files than you will ever need of markets, restaurants, Vaucluse wines, suggested day trips, etc. If you will let me know your areas of interest I will be glad to send them to you; just pm me with your e-mail address. Bedoin has a great market and is a neat little village unto itself. I particularly enjoyed the selection of sausages and herbs:
