;D
Sorry for the lapse. We were out of town--again and I am off by train this week to a conference in Pittsburgh--not Paris by any stretch of any imagination. Last week's trip was to Chadds Ford in PA. to see the Wyeths and then to drive to Wilmingtom to see the return of the exhibit of the pre-Rapaelites. Excuse was friend visiting from California.
Now to France and Lyon. We had been there in 2006 but had missed the Museum of the Resistance and Deportation so planned to get back for that and for Quenelles! Left St. Remy early as the Museum was only open on Sunday--our travel day and closed on Monday. Returned to same hotel, then a Sofitel, now a Mercure--same Accor chain.. Actually liked new lobby arrangement and decor better. had same room as last year and same included great breakfast.
Room was ready so took luggage up and walked across square for lunch at Chez Paulener. they have remodeled and were more upscale in decor but food was good. I had quenelles,of course.
After lunch went to museum. Courtyard was full of tables and people examining the whole issue of immigration and protesting some of the policies being proposed. Seemed an appropriate venue. Went in to museum which was very well done and quite moving. We have been to Resistence Museum in Copenhagen and husband spent war years in Denmark as he was born in 1932. Have also been to Yad Vashem but we were very impressed with how this was set up, integrating the resistance with the deportations, combining exhibits with films and interactive exhibits and not mincing materials about the Vichy Government, etc. We spent several hours and it was well worth the trip.
In the evening we went to Gerges Blanc's restaurant Le Splendid. This is a very appropriate name! the food was indeed splendid. Started with a potato soup amuse, then pate de canard and finally Pulet de Bresse--which was fabulous. Cheese course and then lemon tart for husband and a chocolate torte for me. Carafe of white wine and very worth while meal. We seemed to be only non-French Meal was moderate for quality and came to about 85 euros with everything.
Finally finished postcards and then to bed. Monday after great included breakfast with lotdf food including juice, fruit, yogurt, pastries and made to order eggs walked around area of Place de Republic. then walked across bridge to area by funicular and had a snack before going up to Roman Theatres. Took funicular back down and walked around Old Lyon which was very quiet as many places were closed on Monday. Walked back to hotel and husband returned to room. I backtracked and did some gift shopping for oldest granddaugter in neat shop designed for 20 somethings.
After return to hotel to freshen up and make some calls and check e-mails we went to La Tasee for dinner. We had eaten there last year and loved it. He had Lyonnaise saussages as starter, quenelles with sauce Nantua and a 4 chocolate dessert. I started with foie gras and figs, also had quenelles but had Floating island for dessert. Love that and it is hard to find on menus and this well prepared. Drinks were pastiche for hubby, champagne for me and carafe of local white. Other customers were academics--French, business types from U.S. and two English women who looked like Mother and Daughter from show like East Enders--horribly overdressed and far to much make-up ( Meow) but they actually seemed to enjoy the food.
back to hotel and off to Paris tomorrow after breakfast. Can't wait but I really enjoy Lyon.
