Thanks for the info FW...I enjoyed reading about the armada and about Rouen as well. We'll be in France in April so a trip in July is out for us, even though I'm sure that my husband would enjoy the armada.
As for me, I particularly appreciated your description of Gill, although I'm having a bit of trouble picturing a the "inside of a would-be zen monastery in the suburbs of Vegas, haunted by provincial bourgeois aping the manners of the pre-revolutionary aristocracy" ;D
On a more serious note, what are some local culinary treats that one shouldn't miss in Rouen?

Yes, I did mean local dishes...and you're right, I don't think that I'd be too keen on eating canard au sang if I knew the gory details of the ducks' demise. But it does sound delicious ! Thanks for the info - your native insight is mush appreciated by those of us on the other side of the pond.
