Okay people...tell me what you know about this place! I came across a reference to Vaux de Vicomte as I was researching something else (how often does that happen?! ) It is gorgeous, and I recognize it from scenes in "Man in the Iron Mask" and "Marie Antoinette". I've added a candlelight visit to my side trip list--looks so fun, especially the one held on Aug. 17 (wish I could be there then!) www.vaux-le-vicomte.com/en/actualites-chateau-events.php?date=2007-08-17Anyway, now I've discovered that this is where the Eva Longoria/Tony Parker wedding will take place this weekend. What a fabulous spot for a wedding, huh?!! So here's my question: Is this chateau easily reachable by train from Paris? If so, how? PS--if you hunt around on this website, you will find some nice videos and pictures...

The Vaux website will give you all the info you need to get there by public transport. www.vaux-le-vicomte.com/en/infos-pratiques-chateau.phpI've been there a few times, but I've always rented a car and driven out there to make a dual visit there and at Fountainebleau. But the RER/Shuttle look like they would work splendidly. The shuttle runs later on days when the candlelight dinners take place.

Thank you, Arrow! I poked around on that site for quite awhile and never came across that part of the site--so thanks for pointing it out. Looks like it's very "do-able" for a day trip from Paris.

Annette - do you know yet whether you are going to be able to do this on your next trip? It sounds wonderful, and I'd love to hear your impressions.

It's still on the "maybe" list. If the SNCF strike is over by then, we are planning on heading to Tours to see some chateaux one day, and up to Chantilly and Senlis on another day. I'm stingy with giving up my Paris days, so I'm not sure if we'll head out of town for a 3rd day or not, but the Vaux de Vicomte will be it if we do. It looks gorgeous!

I know there is a difference of opinion on this, but I would not spend time on Senlis except maybe on a very long trip when there was lots of time to spare. While it's true that there are Roman elements in the architecture, they are not really apparent (at least, they weren't to me and I was primed to like it), because they have been incorporated into more recent structures for the most part.
Chantilly is a different matter entirely, and they are in fact close together (I first saw Chantilly when I was on my way to Senlis, although it was several years before I returned and actually visited it).

Looks like we won't be visiting Vaux de Vicomte this trip--it closes for the season on Nov. 11 then opens for a few days at Christmas (Dec. 22-Jan 6) before reopening for the 2008 season next March

Becky, maybe we should look into getting from Chantilly to Fontainebleu instead. Anyone know off hand if it's easy to make a train connection between the two? I was looking into that awhile back but mustn't have figured it out because I don't have it in my notes.

Hi Gitte -
I visited there on a rainy day about 3 years ago. It is not as fancy or as well furnished as many others but the tour was excellent and gave you a good sense about how they lived until Louis got mad. It won't be as an expensive mistake like Moulin Rouge, go for it. If the weather had been good I would have some photographs of it for my book.

I was there in May last year and thought it was fantastic! Very fancy, very well furnished and definitely worth the effort to get there! I can't help with getting there because I went by car with a friend who lives just outside Paris.
Perhaps you can coordinate this with Fontainebleau, they're not far from each other, but I don't know the logistics of getting from Mellun to Fontainebleau via train.
We did both in one day, by car, and I would definitely recommend seeing them both if at all possible.

Good plan! Fontainebleau will be very easy to get to by train.
Have you been to Auvers sur Oise? Another good daytrip from Paris.

During the season months they have an evening candlelight visit that is very nice. The gardens have a zillion candles.
Personally, I take first timers to Vaux le Vicomte in place of Versailles! Usually with Fontainebleu. I like Chantilly. but then I have been involved with horses most of my life. Another very good place that you do not hear about often is Provins..good spot.
