Does anyone have specific suggestions for places we might want to consider seeing in the general Bordeaux area? We likely will not be going into the city itself, but will drive around the area at least one day. Mainly we just want to do some exploring down that direction, as it's only about 45 or 50 km from the village where our little house is located. St Emilion is high on the list of possibles, just because we love the wine and have read that the town itself is old, quaint and well worth a visit. Also we thought we would on one day just go basically due west to see the Cognac area, although we don't know much about whether there's really anything to see there. Any thoughts about either/both (or other sites in the general area)?

St Emillion is indeed a picturesque town. We went there as guests of some locals and they invited us to a very charming little restaurant. I'll look in my files for the name. The one winery that they took us to was Smiths Haut Lafitte (I may have the name a bit twisted). Their father is was one of the best known negociants of the region and the brother owns a winery, so they are experts. The local macarons were an added bonus.

But mes amis, we are talking about red wine . . . it is, after all the only kind worth discussing (well, except that stuff with the bubbles, but that's in a world to itself). And then there's the Cognac, but that's not strictly speaking wine . . . . and there's the Monbazillac (sp?) to go with the foie gras, but that's a special case . . . . and there's . . . . oh well, never mind -- a good St Emilion (or close kin) is always at the top of my personal list! Thanks for the suggestions and resources -- we're leaving on Thursday but I'm planning to take my laptop with me so I will be able to check things out even from "over there" (not to mention, of course, I can keep up with the doings of this lot!)

Hey Diz and Sarastro, as you can see from the report above we just didn't feel like slogging through the vineyards in the rain (we'll hopefully get to that area on our next trip in good weather!) But, thanks for the resource because we for sure will use it!
