I was wondering what movies people have seen recently on DVD that they missed the first time around, and would recommend.
Last night we watched "3:10 to Yuma" on DVD, and really thought it was great (can't remember when I last saw a classic Western - possibly "Tombstone"?). Other than Russell Crowe (and a small role with Peter Fonda) I had never heard of most of the actors although I expect some of them eventually will become known (especially the kid who plays the son of the rancher).
Any other recommendations for what to order from Netflix or Blockbuster or whatever?

Some light and entertaining films en Francais :
The Valet - A comical movie about a valet getting intertwined in the deceptions of a CEO type.
My Best Friend - Charming movie re an antique dealer learning how to have a "true" friend.
Also, and previously discussed on other thread: Avenue Montaigne (I quite enjoyed).
2 Day in Paris - American boyfriend meets girl friend's Parisian parents and is set aback by cultural differences, etc. (I think exaggerated (?) and too cliche).
I also enjoyed Moliere (re the playwright during King Louis XIV time, but movie is basically fiction (uses Moliere's "Tartuffe" as inspiration)).
In the theater , I recently saw "Diving Bell and the Butterfly" which was quite well done (also earlier discussed on other thread).

Not sure of the best place to post this, so I apologize but........ Ratatouille just won "Best animated film" tonight at the BAFTA'S . Britains equivalent to the Oscars, beating Shrek 3 and The Simpsons Movie. ;D I say good luck to it at the Oscars too. Best Actress went to the girl who played Edith Piaf in Le Vie En Rose. See the judges are Paris fans too LOL ;D

Hurrah for Ratatouille (re winning Bafta "best animated" film)! I so enjoyed that movie!!! I recall wanting to see another movie (Paris, Je t'aime (did see that later on dvd)) but I was with my young daughter who wanted to see "Ratatouille" so we went to that movie instead and I was so pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it!
Reminds me of a couple of other good movies, that being the afore mentioned movies and "La Vie En Rose" (the latter I still have not entirely seen, so can't give a complete review).
Non Paris related movies of 2007 that I particularly enjoyed include, inter alia:"Lives of Others" ((East Germany)/before the wall fell/ re Stasis and their surveilance esp as against artists); "Namesake"( beautiful story of American teen coming to grips with his India heritage); "Reign Over Me" (post 9-11 effects and personal dealings with) and "Volver"((Spanish) Gorgeous tale of the love of mothers/strength of women in times of tribulation) ; "Into the Wild" (Great movie about disenchanted young man who abandons civilization to seek "purity" in the wilderness).

I just saw The Savages. Laura Linney got an academy award nomination, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman is always good, but the movie was too depressing for me. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly finally gets to Lincoln next weekend, and soon, Persepolis, which is a French cartoon based on a book of one girls experience in Iran, and France after the Islamic revolution.

I really like Persépolis, it should be seem on a big screen. The drawings are really well done and the story is very telling about the Iranian revolution. I saw it last July in Paris at one of the multiple cinemas around Bastille and we will rented it out for sure.
And it also have the voices of Danielle Darrieux and Catherine Deneuve.

Ray, "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" was excellent...at least I thought so!
andi - we watched a movie called "This is England", set in the 80's in the Midlands, about a young boy's involvment with Skinheads. Very interesting...and powerful.
We also caught some of "Last Tango in Paris"!! Ooh la la. What struck me was that when it first came out in the 70's I thought at the time: "Whew, Marlon Brando looks old!!!!!"
What struck me this weekend? "Whew, Marlon Brando looks young!!!" Sigh... ;D
And whatever happened to Maria Schneider?!

I love Chocolat! That's the movie with JOHNNY DEPP and some dame by the name of Judy, I think. I've seen it three times. Was Juliette Binoche the chocolat maker?

I just showed The Red Balloon to my eight year old daughter. She loved it. I had forgotten how an object could become such a charming character. I had never realized that you could watch movies "on demand" from Netflix. They have a great selection of foreign films in their on demand section that you can watch right on your computer. No waiting for movies in the mail or making a trip to the video store. I also watched The Notebook today to get in a romantic mood for Valentine's Day. What a great movie, although I think that I used an entire box of tissues.

I just saw "Little Children" on cable last night. I usually fall asleep during late evening movies, but this one kept me up and also kept me away from the forum last night.
