This is a little video, quite famous actually and somewhat older but you Paris lovers who haven't seen it yet might like it, it's been circulating around the web for quite a long while (mind you it is from 1976...) so, no breaking news here but for me as a Paris and car lover it is always a hit! I have seen that video before, and I must say that I am not the least impressed by reckless speeding like an idiot and going through red lights.
The driver should have been thrown into the most remote cell in the crypt of La Congiergerie and the key then dropped into the Seine, never to be found again.
IMO, as a former claims handler for traffic accidents involving personal injury and deaths.

I have seen that video before Well then you might have seen that it is one of Lelouch's early movies (more of an essay) called "Rendez-vous"... Admittedly in 1976 they didn't have computer animations but I think "Die Hard 4" should be prohibited too, for the same reasons you mention... But then again I don't want to debate wether or not and how one should drive, I just thought I'd contribute to the lack of information that I suppose led you to your opinion.

kasthor - I would only be happy to learn that this video is pure fiction and that the drive actually never took place.

I'm pretty sure this is a video of our drive in the taxi from the hotel to the airport. If you listen closely, I'm sure you can hear me screaming in the background.

Gitte, since we both agree (unless we haven't seen the same movie) that during this video no major (nor minor for that matter) injury was caused the only thing there is to debate about is wether the impact on the viewer could be negative and therefore my comparison with any other movie made with new technologies. And as GM stated it is business like ususal in Paris!

To me there is still a big difference between computer manipulated fiction in actions movies - and doing these reckless things "in real life". The fact that noone was injured because of the video is not something that the driver or the maker of the video should get any credit for.
They were merely lucky. I have the same opinion about the "Jackass"-stunts, if you know those.
kasthor - let us not quarrel over such matters. I shall exalt you for daring to sport it.
And yes, the video could very well have been filmed from a Taxi Parisien - somewhere between CDG and downtown Paris.

It is available on DVD (Region 2) - C'etait Un Rendezvous but... thought I agree totally about reckless driving it is not all it seems. A recent UK TV programme (Fifth Gear on Channel 5) tried to recreate it and of course took literally hours! They also looked into the background of it - the car is not what it seems, the engine noise was dubbed on afterwards. The camera was mounted on the front of the car as low as possible to give the impression it was going faster than it actually was. The run was done early in the morning in the 1970s, when there was much less traffic on Paris roads.

AH..Thanks Kasthor..but my morning coffee is not sitting so well! Actually reminds me a bit of a taxi ride from JFK to manhattan one time back in the TWA days when I spent a 7 hour delay at CDG(they needed a part which was coming in on a flight from TelAviv! :: Landed at JFK about 3AM. I didn't think it was possible to get from JFK to Manahattan that quickly!! I was anxious to get home but did want to GET there!!

This must be the French answer to Steve McQueen in "Bullitt" - does anyone else remember seeing that chase scene in a theater and feeling their stomache lurch when he comes down over the top of the hill and leaves the ground?
(I do agree with Gitte about reckless driving -- but these days, I think most of the jerk-offs under 25 who are endangering everyone on the road are more likely influenced by video games which explains why they don't take it seriously and they don't seem to comprehend that they are endangering "real" people, plus if it goes wrong they are not going to get a do-over!)

My god, kasthor, I was squealing like a 4-yr-old through the whole thing...Yikes!...It was obviously stunt driving a la Steve McQueen in Bullit, but those stunt drivers have my respect. I kept thinking, " the poor pigeons...". Tres cool!

Kasthor - this totally reminded me of taxi rides in Paris. Of course, there's much more traffic now. Coming from CDG, we careened around the rotary at the Arch during morning rush hour. Even my husband, a veteran Boston driver (our city has a certain reputation in that area) was looking a little pale.
By the way, what are the rules for rotaries in Paris? In Massachusetts, it used to be that the cars entering had the right away. And then they changed it to the cars already in the rotary had the right of way. Now, that was a fun time!

jp - I'll let kasthor answer about Paris (I wouldn't dream of driving there, unless of course the dream was a nightmare!), although I know that in the rest of France generally the cars already in the rotary have priority over those entering it.
But speaking of driving in Boston, I've always thought that people there drive like they're in bumper cars at the fair! (Plus, a favorite joke about Boston driving: The function of the lane markings on Boston streets is to assign responsibility for chasing the pedestrians back up onto the curb . . . .)

Oh, Becky - it's true. Luckily, I learned to drive in Boston so it doesn't bother me. I lived in Chicago for a few years and almost died of boredom behind the wheel!
I look forward to Kasthor's explanation of the rules in Paris, but I suspect there aren't any!

jp & becky, do you remember the famous line in the 70's movie Love Story, when they were driving in Boston in Ryan O'Neal's old MG and the girlfriend told him he was driving like a maniac, to which he replied, "You're in Boston, everyone drives like a maniac".

Yes! And what else I remember about that scence is that they were heading the wrong way out of Boston.

There's a similar "wrong way" scene in The Graduate -- when the Dustin Hoffman character is going to rescue Elaine, he's going the wrong way to get where he's supposedly headed (on the top deck of the Bay Bridge).
But, I'm "proud" to say I never saw Love Story -- sorry, couldn't stand either of the leading actors, and had read the book so knew it was just too much sugar for my taste . . . .
