The world has lost a terrific mime with the death of Marcel Marceau. Since he was French, I wish to extend my condolences to our French members as well as those of us who have enjoyed his performances over the years.

He was also a great hero in the Resistance during WWII. He saved many Jews, especially children, from the camps. He is also responsible for the invention of Michael Jackson's moon walk. MJ was enthralled with MM's Man in the Big Wind bit and the moon walk came out of that. I wonder...if the Germans had caught Marcel Marceau during WWII, could they have made him talk?

Very interesting facts re Marcel Marceau! Who knew he was the inspiration for the moonwalk and was a savior of those so in need during WWII! Of the latter, I read, [w]hen the Germans marched into eastern France, he and his family were given just hours to pack their bags. He fled to southwest France and changed his last name to Marceau to hide his Jewish origins."; and "n the Paris suburb of Sèvres, he worked at a nursery that hid Jewish children from the Gestapo and the French police, who helped round up Jews for deportation."; "Marceau altered children's identity cards, changing their birth dates to trick the Germans into thinking they were too young to be deported. " Sounds like the making of a movie to me! Anyway, on a lighter note, I read yesterday that in Mel Brooks' "Silent Movie," Marcel Marceau had the only speaking line which was "Non!" (when refusing a role in the silent film). LOL!

I would guess if you asked the question of "who is the greatest" on any topic, no one would be more universally cited than Marcel Marceau, as greatest mime.

And what a great trivia question: "In what movie did Marcel Marceau have a speaking role?"

I remember him on "I Love Lucy"! That was probably one of his first "breakout" spots in the US.

Yes. I was saddened to hear of his passing, too. He could express soooo much emotion without words...he was just amazing!!
