:)We are kicking around the idea of adding another Golden Retriever puppy to our family, this one a girl.
That got me to thinking: what type of names do you call your dogs in other parts of the world?
I would especially love to know from our French friends if their are any great French doggie names that would still roll easily off of the American tongue?
Thanks!

Goldenmama - First of all, I'm so thrilled that Louie is going to be a big brother. A few years ago when my friend was about to buy a female Golden Retriever, she asked all her friends to suggest names. I can't even remember what my suggestions were, but she ended up naming her Sushi, which I don't really think suits a large dog, but nonetheless, this dog turned out to be a real doll. The most typical G.R. name in Israel is Goldie, but that's not too original. In any case, I think you should name your dog Berthillon, but if you think that sounds too masculine, then how about Angelina? ;D

Yes, Paris would be nice (just make it clear to everyone that you didn't name her after the Hilton idiot ) . Or you could chose Amélie : it is definetly a human name here, but I don't think that you will offend anyone at your place, would you ? Or you could chose the name of a place in Paris that you like, an area or a monument (Eiffel ?), of some French food, etc ... provided that it sounds "female" enough to your ears . Or you can call her "fifille", which means "girlie" in a rather stupid (cheesy ?) way, but then no one would know it (OK, you and we would ...) . I can't think of no typical female dog's name in French right now, only males names come to my mind : Médor (the most stupid one), Charlie, Oscar, Max too ....

On reading this thread my first thought was to suggest Amelie so I go with Anne's suggestion too, so pretty and French and feminine. We have a girl dog named Mischa, as in Mischa Paris the singer. her name was decided long before we fell in love with the city but has a spooky coincidental connection regardless. Our other female dog is named Treacle, a name she was given before we had her that just stayed.

My favorite French name is Chantal (don't know why just always like the sound) however many years ago had a beautiful springer spaniel. her papers were Suzette of France. My SO's last name just happened to be France. we of course called her Suz. female names from the French lessons. Claire Denise Helene Simone Suzanne Yvonne Yvette and of course there is Louise but probably would confuse them both My suggestions Fleur Bebe Belle Cher Renee Paree (that way you wouldn't think of you know who) LOL my sister suggested Cognac and is this French ? Celeste

Have you read "Almost French" by Sarah Turnbull? Her doggie was named Maddie (short for Madeleine?)

As much as I love Paris, and the name "Paris", I don't think you should give your new baby that name because people would definitely think you're naming it after Paris Hilton.

A silly one but when we get our next dog I want to call him/her Champers...to sounds good, to me, and it happens to be my favourite beverage.

;DSee, this is why I love you people! What great suggestions! Ann, I can't believe you name your dogs Oscar and Max, just like we do. I'm sure the way you say it sounds much better though! I absolutely love Amelie. And Simone, Belle, Fleur, Sabine, and Lulu! Thanks for the great input!

I like Bebe, but I think that would work better with a truly enormous dog! I would love to have something like a regal looking standard poodle, and name (him) Antoine or (her) Sabine.

This is kind of "out there"....but you could call her Millie. It would be your way of Americanizing the abbreviation (Mlle) for Mademoiselle.
I have a 13 year old cat whose name is Monsieur le Prince Louis-Phillipe de Paris, and I simply call him Paris.
I have a dog named Beau (you could use Belle) and a dog named Pelusa (which means fluffy or fuzzy in Spanish)
Toutou could be a good name...it means doggie
And definitely for a girl, because of the play on words, I like Margaux...one of my favorite wines.
Orly, Frenchie, Rue, Metro, Dore (Doray), which of course means golden, Lux, Marly....
Oh my....I could go on and on.....

Goldenmama,
Since your male dog is named Louie, why don't you get a female pup and name her after one of the many wives of the many French kings named Louis? I'm only familiar with one...and you might not want to use Marie Antoinette ;D

How about one of Louis XIV's mistresses. (I'm reading Love and Louis XIV): Angelique or Athenais. (I don't know how to insert accents and such)
