We watched "Jules et Jim" last night (rented it from Netflix as part of my attempt to learn French from watching French films) Have any of you seen it? I thought it was good - very touching and definitely different - it must have been a bit shocking back in 1962! I'm interested in hearing your thoughts...

Yes Jules et Jim is definetely the French nouvelle vague cinéma. The ménage à trois plot did raised a bit of scandal even in 1961, Moreau is absolutely radiant in the film. But I must say that it is not my favorite Truffaut. Like him I have this fascination for Deneuve and La sirène du Mississipi but even more so Le dernier Métro are my favorites Truffaut (well if you don't count yours Truffaut of course !)

Well, of course it goes without saying that OUR Truffaut is #1 round here...but thanks for the review, Luc! I don't think I've seen Le Dernier Métro - I'll have to put it on the list.

I have only seen Truffaut's "400 Blows" (Les Quatre Cents Coups)(1959), but saw it rather recently. It is a semi-autobiographical film in the French New Wave genre. It was done in a "cinema in first person singular" style ( cinema as pen) and is quite an interesting take by Truffaut of a more painful depiction of childhood as opposed to the more typical nostalgic take on childhood. I will have to see some of his other films!
