Did you get shaken awake this morning, Becky? Hope you didn't have anything break around your place!

Well, I'm pretty sure that Becky was online earlier today, obviously she wouldn't have come to read the forum if anything serious had happened to her ? How bad was this one ?

Yes, I saw Becky online this morning when I wrote the message, but she had gotten off before it posted. It was "just" a 4.2, but centered pretty close to Becky, a few miles from Oakland. The report I read said some windows in a Berkeley grocery store were broken, but didn't mention other damage or injuries. I didn't mean to alarm anyone--this sort of thing is pretty much the norm for California! But we're expecting an 8.0 sometime in the future--when you hear about that one, you can worry!

Annette, that is another very good reason for you to relocate the whole family in Paris

Hi, all -- if I was shown as being on line at the time of the earthquake (4:42 a.m. local time!) I must have forgotten to close the browser at work when I left yesterday (but also, I looked in on the forum quickly when I woke up -- after finally getting back to sleep! -- and went on the computer to check where and how bad it was). I most certainly felt it. It was relatively small as such things go, but close by. Not the way I prefer to wake up! I was just thankful it was not one of those that goes on for several seconds; by the time we could decide whether to jump out of bed and run for the door, it was over!
Everything is fine here -- no broken glass, pictures off walls, etc.

Anne, I like your way of thinking! Becky, what I meant was I saw you online when I posted the message this morning just after 7--I wasn't up at 4:45!!! Glad you didn't have any damage. There was a 4.0 in Mammoth a month or so ago, and some friends staying in our condo at the time reported that one of my vases fell and broke, and we got a new crack in the patio. Will check it out when we're up next weekend, but I'm sure it's not too bad.

Annette -- only people who live in California know the "true price" of owning a home here!

I remember when I was a kid, I used to dream of living in California - Hollywood, actually - but then I convinced myself that it was too dangerous to live there. So where did I end up living? Israel - a very safe place, indeed !!!

Thank goodness you're O.K., Becky. It's bad enough I have to worry about my kids. Now I also worry about my dear forum pals. I guess you can never get used to something as scary as an earthquake, right?

Living in southern California I much prefer earthquakes to the hurricanes of the southern US. Those things happen almost on a regular basis. And they are so familiar they are even named. At least our 'quakes are only rated by numbers. And you will notice they often occur when it is really hot, like the earth's tectonic plates need to alleviate some hot air. Well, after 20 years here, that's how it seems to me.

And don't forget, we also don't have blizzards or tornadoes!

These days it is amazing the damage/inconvenience a good ole Thunder storm/heavy rains can do in these parts!! But I guess when I was a kid airplanes were not taking off and landing regularly every few seconds!! No Wright brothers jokes please!
