Well, I guess you've all heard about that steam-pipe explosion, which caused me to cancel my plans to see geordy today. However, we have rescheduled for Monday, and I'm praying that nothing prevents this from happening because starting from Tuesday my hubby, son and his fiancee will be here so I'll be tied up. The scary thing for me about yesterday's accident is the fact that if our plans hadn't changed, my sister and I probably would have been in the vicinity of Grand Central Station at the time of the explosion. However, after enjoying a matinee performance of Chorus Line, we decided to try to also see an evening performance of Jersey Boys. Mind you, it's impossible to buy tickets for that show, but we decided to be adventurous and hang around the theater's box office to see if any cancellations would result in available tickets. We got lucky, and we managed to get tickets about an hour before the show. ;D We were also very fortnate that my brother in law, who works in Manhattan, agreed to drive us home after the show was over. Anyway, my sister and I saw 2 great performances yesterday ............ but I want to see geordy !!!!!!!!!

Glad to know that you are safe, that the important part, the rest can wait until Monday. Which of the two shows did you enjoyed the most?

Jersey Boys was better, truly exceptional. Both my sister and I had seen Chorus Line many years ago, but agreed that it would be nice to see it again, and those tickets were half price. ;D

I'm so glad you're OK, Shoesy (and Geordy, too)! I had a thought that while you are in NYC, you need to go down to the Today show one day and wave to us. You can hold up a Paris sign so we'll know its you.

Thanks for your kind thoughts, everyone. Geordy and I are really anxious to see each other on Monday, right geordy? (We spoke on the phone this morning and had a very nice conversation. Geordy - please tell Gitte that I don't sound like a cowboy. ;D )

Truly so glad you are OK. The pictures and articles in the NY Times were really scary. By Monday everything should be cleared up and the two of you can have a great time.

I've been away from the forum for a little while, and checked in today hoping to hear all is well with everyone who may have been near yesterday's explosion. Glad to hear both Shoesy and Geordy are fine. I've been "two timing" the Paris forum for another lately.....Prius Chat.com. I recently bought a Toyota Prius. Getting used to the new technology is fun, but also a little intimidating, which is why I've been glued to the the other forum. Of course, the folks there are not nearly as "fun" as you all. I'll be back soon. Nice to hear things are rolling along as always. Hope everyone is enjoying their summer.

So glad to read you weren't too close to the explosion! Have a safe rest of your visit. Are you and Geordy eating somewhere nice?

Thanks, greyghost. Geordy and I haven't decided what to do together or where to eat. Since she is the local, I'll let her come up with some suggestions. The important thing is that we're going to meet each other.

The whole thing was on the 8 pm TV news yesterday in France, first topic, and it was quite impressive . They said that many New Yorkers were scared at first because they believed that this was a new terrorist attack . One can understand how people who have already gone through 9/11 felt at first . And they also said that I-don't- remember-which US authority (FBI ?) has made an announcement a few days ago that they know that Al Qaïda has gained strength in the US and that a new attack on the US grounds is expected in the near future . I hope that there is some journalists' exaggeration here ...

I believe it was Homeland Security that issued that statement, Anne. I don't think any one in the US is ever completely comfortable any more. The whole idea of the colored risks of terror just seems so ridiculous--don't we want everyone to be as vigilant as they can all of the time? That reminds me that my kids commented on how the armed military men that they saw at CDG and the Eiffel Tower made them feel better, and they wished that we had them in the US. That's kind of sad, really.

Since I live in Israel, I'm so used to seeing security wherever I go. Every time I enter a restaurant, mall, movie theater, etc., I have to open my bag for a security check. It all seems so natural over there. Here in the States it's hard for me to get used to the fact that I can actually go inside a store without someone first inspecting the contents of my bag .

Yes, but these security checks have not been able to stop terrorists attacks in Israel, as much as the military men in CDG wouldn't be of much use against a determined and organized attack . All this helps people feeling safer and prevents the odd lunatic from trying his own attack, not much more .
And it is true that you soon get used to this . When we first went to Luxor, Egypt, we were at first really shocked, and afraid too, to see military men with guns in hands everywhere, some were even scattered in the gardens of our hotel . And a cruse on the Nile river meant first watching the army guys installing machine guns on the boat's decks . But after only a few days, we just almost didn't notice them anymore . And when we went back this year we were almost disappointed to see that there were much less military men around, although there are still terrorist attacks in Egypt, so we just felt less safe which is stupid considering what I wrote above ...

Of course terrorist attacks can still occur and unfortunately, have occurred despite the security checks, but imagine how often we would have them if there were no security at all.
